The second encounter between AEW’s Kenny Omega and NJPW’s Will Ospreay this year is made official for AEW-NJPW Forbidden Door 2023 event.
Omega and Ospreay clashed earlier this year in the co-main event of NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 event. Omega beat Ospreay and won IWGP US Heavyweight Championship in one of the most critically acclaimed matches of this year. The match got 6.25 stars in Dave Meltzer’s star ratings.
NJPW later announced a #1 contender tournament to find Omega’s challenger. Lance Archer beat Fred Rosser(replaced Juice Robinson) at NJPW Collision in Philadelphia event in April in the first match of the tournament. Ospreay defeated “The Ace” Hiroshi Tanahashi in the second match at Resurgence 2023 event.
Ospreay and Archer then clashed in the final of #1 contender tournament at NJPW Dominion 6.4 event this Sunday where Ospreay was able to come out on the winning side. With Ospreay become the title contender, it was just a matter of time before they clash in a rematch. It was made official for Forbidden Door during a press conference in Tokyo today.
Will Ospreay was present at the press conference and said that Omega embarrassed him at the press conference, and the rematch is about his redemption and revenge on Omega at his home soil in Canada. “I’m going to do to you exactly what you did to me”, Ospreay said at the press conference.
Forbidden Door 2023 is a joint PPV event from All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling to take place in Toronto, Canada on June 25. Apart from Omega vs Ospreay 2, a match between NJPW’s Kazuchika Okada and AEW’s Bryan Danielson was also made official for the event during the press conference.
Danielson sent in a special message for Okada during Dominion 6.4 event and said he is the litmus test for the best wrestler in the world and Okada should face him if he wants to prove the same. Okada accepted the challenge immediately after this message.
