Vasily Lomachenko & George Kambosos to Fight for IBF Title
Vasily Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr. have reportedly been close to agreeing to fight for IBF World Lightweight Championship.
Ring Magazine revealed via Kambosos that both former lightweight champions might end up fighting on April 14, 2024, at a stadium in Australia. The timing for the event would be as such that it will still be on Saturday, April 13, in the United States.
Kambosos told Ring that Perth is the leading candidate to host the event, but Adelaide and Sydney have also shown interest in holding events. Kambosos remained confident that it would be a sellout regardless of the venue.

Davin Haney was the undisputed lightweight champion holding all 4 of WBC, WBA(super), WBO & IBF belts. However, he has now opted to move up to super lightweight. WBC title is already moved on to Shakur Stevenson who beat Edwin Los De Santos earlier this month to win the title. The new IBF Champion will be crowned between Kambosos and Lomachenko.
Both these men have suffered defeats to Haney in the past. Lomachenko was Haney’s latest victim when Haney got a decision in his favor on May 20 this year with a scoreline of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113. But, the result was not without controversy with many pundits and fans giving the fight to Lomachenko.
Lomachenko held various lightweight titles between May 2018 to October 2020. He lost the WBC franchise title to the reigning IBF, WBO & WBA(Super) titles to Teofimo Lopez Jr. in October 2020 via unanimous decision. Lopez ended up losing those titles to George Kambosos in November 2021. Kambosos then lost back-to-back undisputed title fights to Haney in June and October in 2022 in Australia itself.
Kambosos has since beaten Maxi Hughes in July this year in Shawnee, OK, US, via majority decision. Lomachenko also has 3 convincing wins in between losses to Lopez and Haney.
