Tim Tszyu and Brian Mendoza clashed at Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Australia, over the vacant WBO Super Welterweight Championship.
Jermell Charlo was the undisputed champion until two weeks back, but he was stripped off the WBO title due to not facing the mandatory challenger Tim Tszyu, and instead opted to take on Canelo Alvarez. He was stripped off the title the minute he entered the bout on September 30. Tim Tszyu was the interim WBO Super Welterweight Champion, and the winner of this bout was to be awarded the title.
Tszyu had 23 wins without any defeat heading into this bout. He was coming off a win over Carlos Ocampo in June this year at the same venue. Mendoza was on a 3-fight winning streak. He got his biggest win in his last bout by beating Sebastian Fundora for interim WBC Super Welterweight title. Who emerged as the new champion though?
