Shinsuke Nakamura attacked Seth Rollins in August after they teamed up for a tag team match. Rollins responded that if Nakamura wanted a title match, he just had to ask. Nakamura continued with sneak attacks on Rollins along with his mind games, along with revealing about Rollins’ back injury. Rollins retained World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Payback 2023, but Nakamura attacked Rollins after the match.

Rollins said he could give Nakamura another title shot but the mind games continued from Nakamura’s side who said he would pick the date and location of his title match. For the next three weeks, Rollins could not get his hands on Nakamura. On September 18 RAW, Rollins finally issued an ultimatum to Nakamura to reveal details on their title match. On September 25 RAW, Nakamura announced that it would be a last man standing match at Fastlane.
