WWE Fastlane 2023 is a pro wrestling event scheduled for October 7, 2023. The event took place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN.

John Cena was in action in a handicap match. Seth Rollins defended World Heavyweight Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura in the last-man standing match.

NOTES & STORYLINES

WWE Fastlane event was introduced in 2015. All the events in series from 2015 to 2021(except 2020 when the event was canceled in favor of Super Showdown in late February) took place between in February and March months on the road to WrestleMania. The event was discounted in 2022. The event was brought in WWE PLE Schedule in 2023.

On June 20, 2023, Fastlane 2023 was announced to take place on October 7. This is the seventh event in the Fastlane series.

Seth Rollins(c) vs Shinsuke Nakamura – Last Man Standing match for World Heavyweight Championship

Shinsuke Nakamura attacked Seth Rollins in August after they teamed up for a tag team match. Rollins responded that if Nakamura wanted a title match, he just had to ask. Nakamura continued with sneak attacks on Rollins along with his mind games, along with revealing about Rollins’ back injury. Rollins retained World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Payback 2023, but Nakamura attacked Rollins after the match.

Rollins said he could give Nakamura another title shot but the mind games continued from Nakamura’s side who said he would pick the date and location of his title match. For the next three weeks, Rollins could not get his hands on Nakamura. On September 18 RAW, Rollins finally issued an ultimatum to Nakamura to reveal details on their title match. On September 25 RAW, Nakamura announced that it would be a last man standing match at Fastlane.

John Cena returned to WWE on SmackDown September 1 episode where he was confronted by Jimmy Uso. Upon disrespecting comments from Jimmy, Cena poked Jimmy by saying that the wrong Uso quit WWE as he referenced Jey Uso leaving WWE. The Bloodline – Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa – were feuding with AJ Styles. On September 22 Smackdown episode, Cena said he wanted to be in a match. Jey and Solo attacked him, leading to AJ Styles making a save. Adam Pearce announced a tag team match between Cena & Styles vs Jimmy and Solo.

A contract signing segment was announced for later during the same show. Solo and Jimmy attacked Styles backstage before the contract signing and was taken to the hospital. Cena signed the contract for the match before Jey and Solo attacked Cena also and signed the contract. WWE later announced that Cena would be in a handicap match against the Bloodline duo. On Smackdown September 29 episode, Cena was attacked by Jimmy and Solo once again, but LA Knight came out to save him this time. He then signed the contract to be Cena’s tag team partner to turn the match into a tag team affair once again.

Iyo Sky(c) vs Charlotte Flair vs Asuka – Triple Threat Match for WWE Women’s Championship

Asuka was defending WWE Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair at SummerSlam 2023. Bianca won that match but Iyo Sky cashed in MITB breifcase against her to win the title. Charlotte then helped Shotzi in her feud against Damage CTRL. Asuka attacked Iyo on September 8 SmackDown after Flair and Shotzi defeated Bayley and Iyo. Iyo successfully defended the title against Asuka on September 22 Smackdown episode despite Flair stopping interference from Bayley. Flair defeated Bayley on 29 September Smackdown. After the match, Asuka came to Flair’s aid when Damage CTRL tried to surround her. When Asuka screamed at them in Japanese, Bayley misunderstood it as a challenge for a triple threat match and accepted a challenge on Iyo’s behalf.

LWO vs Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits

Lashley and The Street Profits interrupted LWO on September 15 episode after Rey Mysterio agreed to defend the title against Santos Escobar. The Profits defeated Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro in a tag team match on that episode. Mysterio and Escobar defeated The Profits on September 22 episode after The Profits failed to capitalize on an interference from Lashley. Mysterio retained the title against Escobar on September 29 episode. The Street Profits attacked them after the match, and also attacked Wilde when he tried to make the save. Mysterio challenged Lashley and his team for a match at Fastlane.

Rey Mysterio faced Bobby Lashley in a singles match on October 6 SmackDown episode. Lashley got the win after The Street Profits provided a distraction by attacking Joaquin Wilde, Cruz Del Toro and Santos Escobar outside. Wilde and Del Toro were deemed unfit for Fastlane. Rey Mysterio then said he would make a phone call to find a new partner.

Jey Uso announced that he was quiting the Bloodline, SmackDown and WWE on August 11 Smackdown episode after a confrontation with his brothers Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. Cody Rhodes appeared at Grayson Waller effect at Payback and announced that he had used his backstage pull to trade Jey Uso to RAW. Upon his arrival to RAW, Judgment Day started to court Jey to join the faction. On September 19 RAW episode, Judgment Day gave him an ultimatum to decide on joining the faction. Jey hit them with superkicks when they tried to interfere in his match against Drew McIntyre. Cody Rhodes made the save when Judgment Day were beating him up.

On September 26 RAW episode, Jey and Cody came out to stop outside interferences from Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh during tag team title match where Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn were challenging Judgment Day. They were also involved in the post-match brawl. On October 3 RAW episode, Jey confronted Damian Priest before Dominik attacked him with the help of JD McDonagh. Cody made the save again. This was followed by WWE Official Adam Pearce announcing that Cody and Jey would challenge for tag team titles at Fastlane.
