NJPW Resurgence: Mercedes Moné Set for Strong Women’s Title Tournament

NJPW has announced a 4-women one-night tournament for Strong Women’s Championship at NJPW Resurgence 2023 event.

After introducing IWGP Women’s Championship in Japan, NJPW is now introducing a title for women’s division in NJPW Strong also. The company announced that he inaugural champion will be crowned at NJPW Resurgence via a tournament.

The 4 women wrestlers in the tournament come from different promotions. Mercedes Moné is the biggest name of them, having held World titles in WWE and WIGP Women’s Champion. NJPW’s partner promotions, AEW and CMLL will send Willow Nightingale and Stephanie Vaquer, for the tournament, respectively. Stardom, NJPW’s sister promotion, will send Momo Kohgo to complete the line-up.

The tournament bracket will see Moné taking on Vaquer in the first semifinal while Nightingale will take on Kohgo in the second semifinal. The final match will also take place at the same event later in the night.

Mercedes Moné became the second IWGP Women’s Champion when she made her in-ring debut at Battle in the Valley 2023 event in February by beating KAIRI. She later defended the title successfully against AZM and Hazuki at Sakura Genesis before dropping it to Mayu Itawani at Stardom’s Allstar Grand Queendom event last week.

NJPW Resurgence will also see the second semifinal for IWGP United States Championship #1 contender tournament between Will Ospreay and Hiroshi Tanahashi. The winner of this match will face Lance Archer in the final at NJPW Dominion.
