Pillman’s contract with AEW ended earlier this month after which he seems to have ended his 4 years association with the promotion that started with Double or Nothing 2019. Pillman signed with AEW for a full-time contract in July 2021.
Pillman joins a very short list of WWE signings in 2023 as the promotion is reportedly going through a hiring freeze apart from NIL signings. Eddy Thorpe or Carl Fredericks is the only active wrestler to sign with WWE this year. Chelsea Green and Dragon Lee were signed late in 2022.
If the hiring freeze is ending, then WWE is actively in the market for the likes of Nick Aldis and Rush. The company is also said to be cautious against any unfair practice and dealing with under-contract talent. Pillman was also reportedly brought in for tryout after his contract with AEW ended.
