NOTES & STORYLINES
AEW presents AEW Grand Slam Dynamite and Rampage specials at Arthur Ashe Stadium every year from 2021 onwards. 2023 edition of Grand Slam will be its third event in the series. MJF(c) vs Samoa Joe – AEW World Championship
MJF defended ROH Tag Team Championship with Adam Cole at All Out 2023 event. As he was walking back, Samoa Joe shoved him away on the ramp while he was entering for his match. This led to a brawl between Joe and MJF. MJF was later announced to defend AEW World Championship at Dynamite Grand Slam event against the winner of World Title Eliminator Tournament. MJF and Joe met in the ring on Dynamite September 6 episode, where they resorted to brawling once again. Joe hurt MJF’s shoulder during the fight. Samoa Joe won the Grand Slam Eliminator tournament to get the title match at Grand Slam.
Saraya(c) vs Toni Storm – AEW Women’s Championship
Saraya won AEW Women’s Championship at AEW All In 2023 event by beating Toni Storm, Hikaru Shida and Toni Storm in a fatal 4-way match. She was then announced to defend the title at Grand Slam against the winner of another #1 contender 4-way match. Nyla Rose joined the line-up for this match against the other 3 participants from the match at All In. Toni Storm won this match with a pinfall over Britt Baker to set up the match against her former teammate Saraya.
Chris Jericho vs Sammy Guevara
The tension between Sammy and Jericho started when Jericho was courted by Don Callis to join his stable and Jericho was actually thinking about it. All the members of Jericho Appreciation Society left Jericho, but Sammy said he had been with Jericho since the start of AEW and would be there if he needed him. Sammy accompanied Jericho at All In where he lost to Will Ospreay. Jericho pushed Sammy away while he was trying to get cheers for Jericho.
Jericho apologized to Sammy on Dynamite August 30 for his behavior and proposed they should revive their tag team and target the tag team titles. When Aussie Open attacked Jericho, Sammy came for the save. On Dynamite September 6, Sammy and Jericho defeated Aussie Open but things between them turned sour as Jericho hit Sammy twice with inadvertent strikes. On Rampage September 8, Sammy confronted Jericho and said he wanted to punch. When Jericho said he also wanted to do the same, they came to agreement to fight each other at Grand Slam.
Claudio Castagnoli vs Eddie Kingston – Title vs Title Match
Claudio Castagnoli’s rivalry is very old as they are at odds since Claudio left the independent scene for WWE. Claudio defeated Eddie at ROH Supercard of Honor to retain ROH World Championship. Eddie then returned feature opposite Claudio’s Blackpool Combat Club in Anarchy in the Arena match at Double or Nothing 2023, and Stadium Stampede match at All In 2023.
They sat down for an interview on Dynamite Collision September 9 episode where Eddie revealed that he is miffed with Claudio during all this time because he left for WWE without doing business with him in the independent scene. Eddie then asked for a rematch against Claudio at Grand Slam and agreed to put his NJPW Strong Openweight Championship on the line. Claudio accepted the proposal.
Sting & Darby Allin vs Christian Cage & Luchasaurus
Darby Allin became the #1 contender for AEW TNT Championship to challenge Luchasaurus at All Out. Before that, he was set to team up with Sting to face Swerve Strickland and AR Fox at All In in a separate rivalry. However, Swerve kicked Fox out of the match and Christian Cage came in as the replacement. Sting & Darby won the Coffin match at All In, but Darby failed to beat Luchasaurus at All Out. The rivalry continued further with Christian blaming not having his regular tag team partner at All In for the loss. He then challenged Darby & Sting for a tag team match at Grand Slam.
The Mogul Embassy(c) vs The Hung Bucks – ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship
Swerve Strickland started a feud with Adam Page on September 6 Dynamite episode. Brian Cage, Swerve’s stablemate, attacked Page on that episode leading to a match at Dynamite September 13 episode. After Page won the match, The Mogul Embassy attacked Page once again. The Young Bucks came out to save Page and hit a superkick on Prince Nana. On September 16 Collision episode, Page and The Young Bucks issued a challenge for ROH 6-man tag team title for Grand Slam.
The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn(c) vs The Dark Order – AEW Trios Championship
Dark Order challenge The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn for AEW Trios title match at Grand Slam. Later, Evil Uno vs Anthony Bowens match was announced for Collision September 16. However, John Silver replaced Uno in the match along with the stipulation that Billy Gunn and Max Caster are banned from the ringside. Evil Uno attacked Bowens to help Silver win the match.
Orange Cassidy & Hook vs 2Point0(Angelo Parker & Matt Menard)
Hook and Orange Cassidy met backstage on Rampage September 15 episode and agreed to team up for a match. After the show, Angelo Parker and issued a challenge for them, which was promptly accepted by Cassidy and Hook.
