Taking place in Wood’s hometown of Nottingham, UK, the bout saw Wood defend WBA Featherweight Championship. After Leo Santa Cruz relinquished the WBA(super) title of the same division, Wood was promoted as the main champion from WBA Regular Champion.
Mauricio Lara, ranked the best active featherweight by TRBR, looked to continue his winning streak after wins over Emilio Sanchez and José Sanmartin in 2022. His first 2 assignments outside Mexico came against Josh Warrington. He defeated Warrington via TKO in the ninth round before their second bout ended in a technical draw due to a clash of heads.
