Sunny Edwards & Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez are set to clash in a flyweight title unification bout on December 16, 2023.

Boxing Scene confirmed that Edwards and Rodriguez will be clashing at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, AZ. The news was first reported by International Boxing News. The event is set to air via DAZN streaming worldwide. The fight will mark the US debut of UK’s Sunny Edwards.

Edwards holds IBF Flyweight Championship since 2021 when he defeated Moruti Mthalane via unanimous decision. He has since beaten Jayson Mama, Muhammad Waseem, and Felix Alvarado since then.

Edwards signed with Matchroom Boxing in May this year with the aim to become a unified champion and face the other titleholders in the division. He defeated Andres Campos on June 10 in his first bout under Matchroom Boxing via unanimous decision once again.

Jesse Rodriguez was the Fighter of the Year 2022 after 3 big wins while fighting for WBC Super Flyweight Championship. He defeated Carlos Cuadras to win the vacant title before retaining it against Wisaksil Wangek and Israel Gonzalez in dominant displays.

Rodriguez now holds WBO Flyweight title which he won his last bout against Cristian Gonzalez via unanimous decision. Rodriguez suffered a jaw injury in that bout which has delayed the plans related to his next bout.

This fight is expected to be the starting point for Matchroom Boxing’s planned flyweight tournament between all 4 flyweight titleholders. Julio Cesar Martinez holds WBC title and Artem Dalakian holds WBA title in the division.
