There have been more than 40 HIAC matches in WWE so far. The Undertaker has appeared and won the most number of matches. The first Hell in a Cell match took place at Bad Blood: In Your House 1997 PPV where Shawn Michaels defeated the Undertaker. Structure
The Hell in a Cell is a 5 sided cuboid steel chain cage. It is different from a steel cage in the sense that it is made up of open-weave steel mesh chain fencing. Also, the top part of the HIAC cell is also covered which is not the case with a normal steel cage. The cage also covers some ringside area. Earlier, the steel chains used to be black colored, which are now changed to red in recent years.
Rules
A typical Hell in a Cell match can be considered as a street fight or a no holds barred match. The wrestlers are free to use any kind of equipment and are free to roam anywhere inside the cage. To win the match, the aim is not to leave the cage. The match can only end via either pinfall or submissions in the ring. The tag team or handicapped match is a tornado tag match by default.
Also, a Hell in a Cell match cannot end in a DQ or stoppage. However, there have been some exceptions to both these rules sometimes:
- Mankind vs Kane match at RAW is War on 24 August 1998 called to end with a no-contest after Stone Cold Steve Austin’s attack
- Triple H pinned Chris Jericho on the top of the cell at Judgement Day 2002.
- Randy Orton vs John Cena match on WWE RAW 28 September 2009 ended in a no contest.
- Kevin Owens vs Shane McMahon match at Hell in a Cell 2017 took place under Falls Count Anywhere rules and Owens pinned McMahon outside the cell.
- Seth Rollins vs The Fiend Bray Wyatt match at Hell in a Cell 2019 ended in a referee stoppage.
