Storyline
Drew McIntyre returned and confronted Gunther after the latter defeated Matt Riddle at WWE Money in the Bank. He even dropped Gunther with a Claymore Kick. That was McIntyre’s first appearance since WWE WrestleMania 39 where he was in a triple-threat match against Gunther and Sheamus.
McIntyre also teamed up with Riddle to defeat the Imperium in a tag team match. The following week McIntyre came face to face with Gunther and challenged him to a title match. Gunther declined the match initially, but then he revealed that he would put his title on the line against McIntyre at SummerSlam 2023.
Live Blog
Drew McIntyre is the first one to walk out to the ring along with his sword. The imperium’s Ludwig Kaiser accompanied by Giovanni Vinci introduced the Ring General Gunther.
They lock up and Drew starts things by pushing Gunther to the mat. Gunther fires back with shots and then puts him in a side headlock. Drew takes him outside and slams his face to the barricade.
They return inside and Gunther continues to fire punches before Drew counters with a Glasgow Kiss. Drew goes outside where Gunther hits the backdrop on the steel steps.
Gunther takes control of the match as he continues to hit Drew. Gunther hits a big chop which drops Drew. Gunther continues to pick up Drew only to drop him again with the shots.
A clothesline from Gunther infuriates Drew and the latter starts hitting clothesline of his own. After a trade of clothesline, Gunther hits the German Suplex.
Now, they start trading chops and then Drew connects the belly-to-belly suplex. Gunther connects a big chop but Drew counters with a neckbreaker. Drew measures Gunther for the claymore but the latter ducks him and hits a shotgun dropkick.
Gunther goes for the powerbomb but Drew counters it and hits one of his own followed by a future shock DDT and gets a near fall. Drew gets ready for claymore again but Gunther goes to the floor and Drew follows him with a suicide dive.
Drew goes for the claymore but Gunther hits another shotgun dropkick instead followed by a powerbomb to get a two-count. Gunther goes to the top and hits a splash for a near fall.
Gunther goes for the chop but Drew catches his hand, and they start to trade chops. Drew manages to hit the claymore kick out of nowhere, but Gunther kicks out.
Drew sets up Gunther on the top rope and hits several chops. Gunther fights back and hits splash from the top rope followed by a powerbomb to get the pinfall.
