Gunther vs Drew McIntyre Official for WWE SummerSlam 2023

WWE has made “The Ring General” Gunther vs Drew McIntyre match for the Intercontinental Championship official for SummerSlam 2023.

Gunther called out Drew last week to face him. Drew and Gunther met in the ring during this week’s RAW(July 24) where Gunther insulted the Tampa crowd and said he would not defend his title in this city. Gunther also went on to insult Drew over his failure to win Universal Championship at Clash at the Castle and Intercontinental title at WrestleMania 39.

Drew replied by pointing out how he and Sheamus beat up each other at WrestleMania and Gunther just picked up the bones to win that match. He then challenged Gunther to face him at SummerSlam and claimed that he would win the title.

Ludwig Kaiser stepped up to Drew to stop him from insulting Gunther. This led to a match between Drew and Kaiser, where Drew came out victorious. After the match, Gunther attacked Drew and dropped him on the floor. He was about to put Drew through the table but Drew countered and put Gunther through the annnounce table with a powerbomb.

WWE made the official announcement for this match at SummerSlam after RAW via social media. WWE SummerSlam 2023 is set to air on August 5 from Ford Field in Detroit, MI.

Gunther is the WWE Intercontinental Champion since June 2022 and has defended his title on a regular basis. He retained the title over Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39 also.

On haitus since WrestleMania, Drew McIntyre returned at Money in the Bank event earlier this month to attack Gunther after he retained the title against Matt Riddle. He also saved Riddle from attacks from Imperium on the following RAW episodes.
