EVENT NOTES

Iridium Sports Agency announced in December 2023 that their client Montserrat Rendon would fight on March 23rd’s UFC Fight Night event. This was the first mention of the event. Later, it was reported that UFC had applied for a license for an event at UFC Apex Arena on March 23, 2024. Due to it taking place at UFC Apex Arena, the event is also known as UFC Vegas 89 event. It is also called UFC on ESPN 53 since it would air on ESPN in United States.

UFC President Dana White announced in January that the main event would be Rose Namajunas vs Amanda Ribas flyweight bout.

Montserrat Rendon was later announced to fight Nora Cornolle. However, Rendon’s opponent was then changed and she was booked to face Dariya Zheleznyakova.

Mohammad Usman announced in early January that he would fight Chris Barnett on March 23. However, when the official announcement was made by UFC, Barnett had to pull out of the fight with unknown reasons, and Usman was announced to fight Mike Parkin instead.

Edmen Shahbazyan vs Dusko Todorovic middleweight bout was announced for the show. On February 13, Iridium Sports Agency tweeted that their client AJ Dobson would face Shahbazyan on the date. The reason for Todorovic’s withdrawal from the bout remains unknown.

Junior Tafa was announced to face Karl Williams in a heavyweight bout at this event. But, Junior Tafa then replaced his Justin Tafa at UFC 298 PPV against Marcos Rogério de Lima after an injury to Justin Tafa. Junior Tafa lost the bout at UFC 298 via TKO. Later, it was reported Junior would be replaced by Justin Tafa at this event to face Williams.

Stephanie Luciano vs Shauna Bannon women’s bantamweight bout was announced for the event. Bannon pulled out of the bout in early March with unknown reasons. Julia Polastri was later revealed as her replacement.

Davey Grant vs Cody Gibson bantamweight bout was announced for the event. Grant pulled out of the bout two weeks before the event with unknown reasons. Johns Miles came in as a replacement.
