Charles Oliveira was supposed to fight lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 294, but he suffered a cut on his eye just a week before the fight which ruled him out of action. He was last in action against Beniel Dariush which earned him the #1 contender status. However, he has to fight for the same status against Tsarukyan once again.

Arman Tsarukyan also defeated Dariush in his last bout at UFC Austin Fight Night in December for his third win in a row. He has a record of 8 wins and 2 losses in UFC. Oliveira’s record in his last 13 bouts is 12-1. Which one among them will be the one to improve their impressive records and earn a title shot? Round 1: Both start with calf kicks. A big calf kicks from Oliveira trips Tsarukyan. Oliveira immediately puts him in a front headlock. Tsarukyan gets up on his feet but Oliveira has the lock on. Oliveira turns it into a standing guillotine choke. Tsarukyan was struggling but manages to come out of it. Oliveira is still on top of him though and lands few elbows. Tsarukyan manages to pause Oliveira’s attack before rolling him over to get on the top. Tsarukyan lands a few elbows. Oliveira is also trying to attack from below and locked in Tsarukyan’s left arm to keep him close. He slowly gets the arm also in the lock. He has to let go as he attempts to attack. Oliveira hits an upkick which catches Tsarukyan’s shoulder and face. The referee stops the fight deeming that kick as illegal. A doctor is brought in to check on Tsarukyan. The fight will resume at the same position. One minute still to go into the round. Tsarukyan is trying to set something up but Oliveira is defending well so far. Tsarukyan lands a couple of elbows. Oliveira gets his arm under control and rolls him to the side. They get up to their feet. Oliveira pushes Tsarukyan to the cage as the fight comes to an end.

Round 2: Both men go for a sidekick at the same time. Oliveira lands a big right seconds later. Tsarukyan attempts quick punches but Oliveira steps back to avoid them. Tsarukyan hits an axe kick which pushes him to the cage. Tsarukyan attempts a takedown but Oliveira gets hold on his neck. They stay on the cage for a while in the same position until Tsarukyan trips Oliveira. Tsarukyan stays on the top but is not able to do anything with Oliveira wrapping his legs around him. Oliveira throws in elbows after a while. Tsarukyan gets some punches to the ribs while Oliveira tries to keep him close. Tsarukyan lands some big elbow shots as the final minute starts. Oliveira has to let go his arms and body which leads to more big shots from Tsarukyan. Tsarukyan lands a couple of more slicing elbows. Oliveira attempts a submission in the final seconds.

Round 3: Oliveira attempts a flying knee but to no avail. They exchange punches. Tsarukyan is getting the better shots. Both men are cautious now. Tsarukyan attempts a takedown but Oliveira stands his ground. Oliveira throws in a calf kick. Tsarukyan lands a few jabs. Oliveira hits a body kick. Tsarukyan lands one of his own. Tsarukyan get a takedown but Oliveira is trying to turn into a guillotine choke. Tsarukyan is in a crossbody and Oliveira has to let go of his neck after 30 seconds. Tsarukyan gets on Oliveira’s back as the continue scrimage on the floor. Oliveira suddenly gets a choke on Tsarukyan’s neck and changes it into a D’Arce Choke with less than 30 seconds to go. The referee checks on Tsarukyan who gives him a thumbs up. The time runs out.

Official Decision: Arman Tsarukyan won via split decision(29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
