John Cena vs Roman Reigns Official for WWE SummerSlam 2021
WWE has made John Cena vs WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns official for SummerSlam 2021 PPV.
John Cena returned to WWE at Money in the Bank 2021 to confront Roman Reigns. On the next RAW episode, Cena went on to challenge the Universal Champion for a title match at SummerSlam.
Cena also appeared on SmackDown last week and once again called out The Tribal Chief. However, Roman declined the challenge in his promo last week and went on to mock Cena for being the same person all this while. Later, Roman went on to accept a similar challenge from Finn Balor.
WWE announced a contract signing segment between Roman and Balor to make their match official for SummerSlam. Both men appeared in the ring on this week’s SmackDown. After cutting a promo on Balor of sending him back to NXT, The Head of the Table went on to sign the contract. Balor also replied to Roman by saying that he would gladly return to NXT as the Universal Champion.
Just as Balor was about to sign the contract, Baron Corbin attacked him and took him to the floor for a beatdown. Corbin himself tried to sign the contract, but he was then stopped by John Cena. As the chaos settled, Cena picked up the contract and signed it himself. Roman was seething with anger, but there was hardly anything he could do after that.
WWE Officials Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville made the match official later in the show despite some arguments from Paul Heyman(Roman’s special counsel).
WWE SummerSlam will air on 21 August 2021 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV. WWE has sold the complete quota of 40,000 tickets for the event.
This will only be the second time that Cena and Reigns will face-off in a singles match. Their previous encounter came at No Mercy 2017 PPV where Roman defeated Cena.
Also, Roman vs Cena is just the second match to be confirmed for the show. A triple threat match for WWE RAW Women’s Championship is also announced. Goldberg vs WWE Champion Bobby Lashley, Edge vs Seth Rollins and WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair vs Sasha Banks are the other matches expected to take place at SummerSlam.
