WWE SmackDown Live Results – 28 August 2020- Reigns Return

WWE Producer Adam Pearce is given a task by Vince McMahon. He has to go and get the contract signed for Triple Threat Universal Title Match for Payback 2020. He instructs to start with the Fiend, and if he does not find him, try Bray Wyatt in the Firefly Fun House.

Jeff Hardy comes out and cuts a brief promo until AJ Styles interrupts. Styles slanders Hardy for using a knee brace last week to get the title win over him. AJ was about to challenge him again but the doctor has not cleared him for tonight. Hardy tells him that its too bad because he is about issue an open challenge.

Jeff Hardy defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to retain WWE Intercontinental Championship match.

After the match, Hardy goes up the ramp when the lights go off. Sami Zayn makes his return with the IC title belt and taunts Hardy. AJ also comes up the ramp and the distraction provides Zayn the chance to hit Hardy with a Helluva kick.

Sami Zayn is interviewed backstage now. He tells that its wrong that Jeff Hardy is calling himself the Intercontinental Champion when he never lost it in the first place. He adds how he defeated Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania and is the real champion.

Bray Wyatt goes on the screen from Firefly Fun House. Wyatt is happy that he has the Universal title back and warns Roman Reigns in a serious tone. Adam Pearce comes to the door, dressed as a postman, for getting the contract signed. Wyatt plays around with him a bit before signing the contract and once again warning Braun Strowman and Reigns.

Matt Riddle cuts a promo from the ring and calls out Baron Corbin. Corbin does not come out until after the commercial break. Shorty G attacks Riddle from behind and Corbin sets up a match between Shorty and Riddle.

Matt Riddle defeated Shorty G in a short match.

Adam Pearce goes to Roman Reigns’ door but no one answers.

Kayla Braxton gets Baron Corbin for an interview and Corbin confirms the match against Matt Riddle at Payback. He also swears to destroy Riddle at Payback.

Bayley and Sasha Banks are out to the ring for a promo. Bayley says they are confident of retaining the title over Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax at Payback. Bayley takes the blame on herself that Sasha lost the RAW title to Asuka. Banks also seemed pissed off. Baszler and Jax appear on the big screen and tell the Golden Role Models that they hate them more than they hate each other. The promo battle continues and Banks cuts a passionate promo saying that she will come out of Payback with the title.

Drew Gulak hits Braun Strowman with the steel chair just as Adam Pearce was approaching him for contract signing. Strowman tells him to get Gulak to the ring if he wants the contract signed.

Sami Zayn joins SmackDown Tag Team Champions Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura backstage. Tag champs are pissed at Zayn since he did not even talk to them once while he was away. Zayn apologizes and want to hang out in the champions lounge. Cesaro tells him that he and Nakamura were having a conversation as a team before he walked in and wants to continue on it. He asks Zayn to leave and Zayn obliges saying he has much more to do anyway.

Braun Strowman defeated Drew Gulak in a squash match. Afterwards, Strowman signs the contract for Payback match.

Kalisto tells Lince Dorado that he has learnt from his mistakes vs Cesaro last week and asks him to stay back during his match against Cesaro tonight. Kalisto leaves but Metalik and Dorado are not happy about it. Nakamura and Cesaro attack them both from behind.

Cesaro defeated Kalisto in a singles match.

Adam Pearce tells Vince McMahon that he got signatures from Wyatt and Strowman but Roman did not answer the door. Vince tells him to knock Roman’s door down and get the contract done.

Tamina Snuka, Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss have a backstage segment. All seems fine between Cross and Bliss now. Nikki is her usual self and talking energetically about Nikki. Then she suggests some hairstyle to Bliss which reminds her of the Fiend. Bliss snaps and trashes Cross’ coffee mug.

The Miz, John Morrison and Sheamus get together to discuss their strategy for the tag team match. Morrison suggests something but Sheamus tells them to follow his lead and walks away.

Big E and Heavy Machinery defeated The Miz, John Morrison and Sheamus in the 6-man tag team match. Sheamus left the match midway after being pissed off at Morrison.

Adam Pearce is in Roman Reign’s room. Roman wants some changes in the contract before signing. He promises to be in the match at Payback, break everyone before leaving and win the Universal Title. Reigns says that is not just a prediction, that is a spoiler. The camera then zoom out and Paul Heyman is sitting next to Reigns. Heyman tells Pearce, “Believe that!” before SmackDown goes off the air.
