On February 10, 2024, MMA Junkie’s Nolan King reported that NJSEA has allocated $5 million for an UFC PPV event on June 1, 2024. Chronologically, the event was UFC 302 PPV.
At the post-show press conference of UFC 300, UFC President Dana White announced that UFC Lightweight Championship bout between Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier would headline this event. Additionally, he also announced a non-title 5 round middleweight bout between Sean Strickland and Paulo Costa.
Gillian Robertson and Michelle Waterson-Gomez were reportedly booked for a flyweight bout for the event. A few weeks later it was reported that the bout was postponed to UFC 303 PPV.
Alexander Volkov and Jailton Almeida were reportedly booked for a bout at this event. However, Volkov was later announced to face Sergei Pavlovich at UFC Saudi Arabia event later that month. Almeida was later reported to face Alexander Romanov instead.
Joshua Van was booked to face Sumudaerji at the event. Later, it was reported that Sumudaerji had been removed from the bout with unknown reasons. Iridium Sports Agency then announced that Tatsuro Taira would face Van as a replacement.
