Welcome to the live results blog for WWE SmackDown August 11, 2023, which was live from Calgary, Canada, with the build-up towards Payback 2023.
Two matches were announced in advance with Austin Theory was supposed to defend United States Championship against Santos Escobar. Escobar earned the title shot by winning an Invitational tournament. AJ Styles and Karrion Kross clashed in another singles match as they continue the rivalry.
However, more interest was around Jimmy Uso and Roman Reigns’ segment which was their first appearance since Jimmy turned on his twin brother Jey at Summerslam. Did Jimmy reveal the reason behind this turn of events?

RESULTS
- Charlotte Flair vs Asuka singles match ended in a no-contest.
- AJ Styles defeated Karrion Kross in a singles match via pinfall.
- LA Knight defeated Top Dolla in a singles match via pinfall.
- Rey Mysterio defeated Austin Theory(c) in a singles match via pinfall to win WWE United States Championship.
LIVE UPDATES
Charlotte Flair vs Asuka
They lock up and Flair goes for arm wringer. Asuka struggles to counter it but manages it turn around after a while. Flair no-sells her tackle off the ropes. They trade forearms before Flair pushes Asuka to the mat. Asuka hits a dropkick to counter a handspring move. She hits sidekick to the body before Flair trips her. Flair hits a boot to the face. Flair hits a roundhouse kick from the apron. Flair goes to the top but Asuka pulls her down and hits a dropkick and a running kick to take us to a break.
Flair hits a springboard crossbody on the floor as we return. She hits a crossbody from the top. Flair hits quick chops before a fallaway slam and handspring clothesline to get a two-count. More shots from Flair before she hits a spear. Flair looks for a figure four when Iyo Sky’s music hits and she comes out with Bayley and Dakota Kai. Asuka counters but Flair hits her with big boot. They trade forearms. Bayley gets to the apron and Flair goes deal with her. Asuka nails her with a forearm. Iyo hits a double dropkick to cause a disqualification.
Result – No Contest
Damage CTRL beat up Flair and Asuka after the match for a while before standing tall.
We get a video package for Tribal Combat match from SummerSlam where Jimmy turned on Jey.
Santos Escobar is interviewed backstage. He says he will beat Austin Theory tonight. Theory attacks him from behind and smashes his leg in a production case.
We see how Iyo Sky’s WWE Women’s Championship win was covered in Japan.
Rey Mysterio is with Santos Escobar backstage in the medical room. Escobar is icing his knee.
AJ Styles vs Karrion Kross
Styles hits a dropkick right out of the gate. AJ hits some stomps before gping for a submission. Kross comes back with punches before hitting a back body drop. Kross hits a corner clothesline before an elbow and a Saito suplex to get a one-count. AJ fires a punch but Kross quickly whips him hard into the corner. He hits chops on the top rope. AJ slips away and clotheslines Kross to the floor. AJ goes for a running knee from the apron but Kross picks him up and hits a Death Valley driver on the announce table to take us to a break.
AJ is fighting back after the break with quick moves. He goes Phenomenal Forearm but Kross ducks and outs on Kross Jacket. AJ drops to his knee. He manages to send Kross into the turnbuckle. He hits a moonsault which Kross tries to block. He hits a brainbuster next. AJ hits a springboard 450 splash. Scarlett puts Kross’ legs on the ropes to break the pin. Michin’ attacks Scarlett but she drops Michin’. Kross hits a Saito Suplex. AJ hits an enzuigiri to drop him. AJ looks for Styles Clash but Scarlett gets to the apron. Michin pulls her down and sends her into the announce table. Kross blocks Styles Clash but AJ nails him with an enzuigiri. Styles hits Styles Clash to get the pinfall.
Winner – AJ Styles
We get a recap of Cody Rhodes vs Brock Lesnar match from SummerSlam.
Cathy Kelley is outside medical room waiting for an update on Santos Escobar. Austin Theory comes in and mocks Escobar saying he is like a toilet paper and falls apart everytime. Rey comes in and tells Theory that Escobar will be out there.
Edge Wants Sheamus!
Edge says it is way too long that he has been in the ring. His 25 years celebration is next week in Toronto, but he wants to have a match next week against someone he has not faced yet. He wants to face Sheamus next week. Edge says Sheamus is the reason he was able to return to the ring as Sheamus was the one who lit the fire under him. Edge narrates the story of how Sheamus’ Celtic Warrior workout forced him to think about a return to the ring. Also, when Edge started getting ready for Royal Rumble 2020, Sheamus came and stayed with him to get him ready.
Edge brings out Sheamus, who is accompanied by Butch and Ridge Holland. Sheamus shows us a footage from Celtic Warrior workout episode where Edge fell off the bike. They taunt each other for a while. Sheamus talks about a time in 2004 when he was pondering about whether to pursue a career in WWE or not, and WWE came to Ireland when he met Edge who brought him to US. Sheamus says without Edge, he would not be standing here in the ring. Edge then asks him for the match next week. Sheamus agrees.
LA Knight vs Top Dolla
Knight ducks a corner splash and fires punches. He runs the ropes but B-Fab picks his leg. Top Dolla takes advantage to take control. Top Dolla chokes Knight on the ropes. Adonis takes a cheap shot at Knight from the outside. Dolla stands on him for a while. Knight lands on his feet on a Death Valey Driver. Knight fires quick punches before a bulldog from the second rope. He decks Adonis off the apron. He hits hits an elbow drop and Blunt Force Trauma to get the pinfall.
Winner – LA Knight
Escobar is with Mysterio again in the medical room. Adam Pearce comes in and says trainer has cleared him, but wants to ask if Escobar wants this match. Escobar says he is ready.
Bobby Lashey is with The Street Profits backstage. Lashey says the saddest thing in the world is untapped potential. He says The Profits have done so much, but there are still much left to do. He talks about their attack on The Brawling Brutes last week and wonders what they can do together, and says SmackDown needs new blood to run it. They cheer on it.
Austin Theory(c) vs Santos Escobar Rey Mysterio – WWE United States Championship
Escobar makes his entrance but Theory attacks him from behind, taking out his knee once again. Theory gets into the ring. Pearce, Mysterio, and other LWO members run out to check Escobar. Theory cuts a promo talking about not defending his title. Pearce talks with Escobar and then announces Rey Mysterio will face Theory tonight. Rey runs into the ring and hits calf kicks quickly. Theory hits back but Rey kicks him to the floor. Rey hits a diving hurricanrana to send Theory into the barricade. We cut to a break.
Match is underway as we return and Theory is in control. He hits a side slam. Rey hits a hurricanrana to send Theory into the turnbuckle. Rey hits a senton from the top before springboard crossbody. Rey sends Theory into the corner. Theory avoids him in the corner and nails an elbow. Rey hits an inverted hurricanrana to send Theory into the corner once again. Theory plays possum and hits a punch. Rey lands on his feet on A-Town Down and hits a kick to Theory’s spine. Theory blocks 619 but his back gave out. Rey sets up 619 and hits it. He hits a leg drop and gets the pinfall.
Winner – Rey Mysterio
Rey celebrates with Escobar, Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro on the ramp. LWO members hug as pyro goes off. Theory is in crying in the ring.
Bothers Fight!
Roman Reigns makes his entrance with Solo Sikoa and Paul Heyman. After the break, Roman asks the crowd to acknowledge him. He then asks Heyman where is Jimmy. Heyman says he does not know. He spoke to Jimmy this morning but he was rather sulky. However, Jimmy was on the floor under his hood once again. Jimmy gets into the ring and heavy boos take over the arena. The chants of “you sold out” as he gets into the ring. Roman tells him not to worry about them and they mean nothing.
Roman tells Jimmy that he owes him one, asks him for a wish – a new car, a yatch, plane, whatever… Jimmy says he does not need anything from Roman, as what he did at Summerslam was not about him. Roman says he can do anything, other than material things also if he wants to be the new right hand man. Jey Uso’s music hits and he comes out to the ring and snatches the mic out of Jimmy’s hands. Jey says he is about to throw 37 years down the drain.
Jimmy says he threw 37 years down the drain because he loves Jey. Jimmy says he would have lost him if Jey won at Summerslam and became the Tribal Chief, as the power would have turned Jey like Roman. Jimmy says he would have never forgiven himself if Jey would have become egoistical, manipulative a-hole like Roman. Jimmy says he is fine if Jey hates him, but it was not to take shine off him. But if Jey wants to take a shot at him, he can. Jey thinks about it for a long time before turning his back towards Jimmy. Jimmy tries to get to the other side but Jey turns again.
Jimmy leaves the ring. Roman takes over and says there is no better time to tell them that he told him so. Roman goes to rant about listening to him and acknowledge him. Jey nails Roman with a superkick. Solo fights Jey breifly before Jey hits him with a superkick. Roman hits a superman punch on Jey. Jey stops a spear and hits a superkick. Jimmy is on the ramp by now. Jey tells him to stop and come back. Jimmy comes back and hits a superkick. Jey then talks into the camera and says he is out of the Bloodline, SmackDown and WWE. Jey leaves through the crowd and he show goes off the air.
