Update on AEW’s Andrade El Idolo Appearances with CMLL
Andrade El Idolo’s return to CMLL has triggered discussions about his future in wrestling.
According to information shared by Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, it was noted that Andrade El Idolo hadn’t committed to a new contract with AEW. There were considerations about his potential return to CMLL, which might serve as a backup plan if he decides to return to WWE.
Andrade caught attention with a significant vignette appearance during CMLL’s Arena Mexico event on Friday, December 8, 2023. Confirmation swiftly followed that he’d be marking his comeback to the promotion on December 15. Furthermore, reports emerged indicating his discussions with both CMLL and AAA.
It is also reported that political aspects could be at play, as joining CMLL would potentially enable El Idolo to collaborate with AEW and NJPW for future appearances and matches. Andrade
Additionally, Meltzer highlighted that Andrade had been engaged in discussions with AAA until recently, suggesting that his choice to join CMLL wasn’t solely driven by the prospect of working with AEW or NJPW. Instead, it seems to stem from a multifaceted assessment weighing the merits of both options.
Andrade El Idolo has previous associations with CMLL from 2007 to 2015 during which time he also made appearances in NJPW. He signed with WWE in 2015 in a developmental deal. He went on to be associated with the promotion until he asked for his release in 2021.
Andrade recently competed at GCW Highest In The Room 2 event, securing a victory over Joey Janela in a solo match. He is set for two more appearances in GCW in January.
