UFC 296: Ian Garry Battling Pneumonia, Luque Bout Canceled

The scheduled bout between Vicente Luque and Ian Machado Garry for the UFC 296 event has been canceled.

Dana White shared a video on Twitter, revealing that the matchup between Luque and Garry at UFC 296 event won’t take place due to Garry’s illness. He mentioned that Garry had been battling the flu, which unfortunately progressed to pneumonia, leading to the fight’s cancellation.

Ariel Helwani had a conversation with Garry, during which Garry confirmed that he was dealing with pneumonia. Despite the efforts of the doctors to assist him, the final decision came from the UFC doctors who declared that Garry would not be able to compete.

Gary also expressed his frustration regarding this news and emphasized his strong desire to fight, highlighting that it’s his favorite thing to do.

Vicente Luque and Ian Machado Garry were set to face off in a welterweight division bout, positioned on the main card of UFC 296 PPV event. Ian Machado Garry was looking to continue on his impressive 13-fight winning streak.

There is no news if Luque will get a new opponent at the event with just 3 days notice. Belal Muhammad is the backup fighter for the main event welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington while Shavkat Rakhmonov will face Stephen Thompson in another welterweight contest.

UFC 296 event is scheduled for December 16, 2023, and will be broadcast live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
