Dustin Poirier vs Justin Gaethje 2 Headlines UFC 291 for BMF Title
An exciting rematch between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje will headline UFC 291 PPV for the vacnat BMF title, UFC has announced.
As has been the case multiple times this year, UFC President Dana White announced a set of matches for upcoming UFC events. A major part of the announcements was for UFC 291 PPV, which was confirmed to take place at Dalton Center in Salt Lake City, UT.
White mentioned that the BMF title is now vacant after the retirement of Jorge Masvidal. BMF title, a symbolic title from UFC, was introduced at UFC 244. Masvidal was awarded the title at the event after he defeated Nick Diaz in the main event in a welterweight bout. He never defended this title after that bout.
White announced that two of the baddest dudes – Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje would now clash for the BMF title in the main event of UFC 291 PPV. The bout is going to be a 5-rounds lightweight bout. Poirier and Gaethje first fought to headline a UFC on Fox event in April 2018 where Poirier became just the second fighter to beat Gaethje via fourth-round TKO.
In five years, both men have since won 6 bouts and lost twice in UFC. They both became interim lightweight champions and challenged for the Lightweight title twice but lost to Khabib Nurgamedov and Charles Oliveira in title fights. Also, they have both defeated Michael Chandler.
Poirier was last seen beating Chandler via submission at UFC 281 in November 2022. Gaethje defeated Rafael Fiziev at UFC 286 via majority decision after an exciting fight.
The rest of the main card for UFC 291 was also announced and had exciting bouts like Alex Pereira’s light heavyweight debut against former champion Jan Blachowicz along with Paulo Costa taking on Islam Aliskerov in a middleweight bout.
