NOTES & STORYLINES
Survivor Series event has occurred every year since 1987 in the latter half of November. The announcement for the 2023 edition came on July 7, 2023, with Chicago’s Allstate Arena as the venue.
The tickets for the event went on sale on July 21 with 12,953 seats open to the public. The tickets were sold out on official Ticketmaster website by mid-October. Some tickets were left with re-seller platforms though.
Men’s War Games Match
Some reports emerged in September that WWE was planning to book a War Games match at this event. WWE confirmed the return of War Games for a second year in a row for Survivor Series during Crown Jewel PLE broadcast.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were feuding with Judgment Day since June 2023. They lost Undisputed Tag Team Championship to Damian Priest and Finn Balor from the faction. Cody Rhodes brought Jey Uso to RAW at Payback on September 9. They teamed up to beat Balor and Priest to win tag team titles at Fastlane. However, Priest and Balor won the titles back just after 9 days on RAW. Kevin Owens was traded to SmackDown in exchange of Jey, but Sami vowed to continue fighting Judgment Day and not let them dominate.
Seth Rollins had his own rivalry going with Judgment Day as he defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Finn Balor at Money in the Bank and SummerSlam. Damian Priest won men’s Money in the Bank briefcase. He teased to cash it in against Rollins on several occasion. He attempted to cash in at Crown Jewel also, but Sami took the briefcase away from him. On November 6 RAW episode, Priest attacked Sami after Rollins defeated Sami in a title match. A brawl broke out with Jey Uso, Cody Rhodes, JD McDonagh, Balor and Dominik Mysterio also getting involved. Adam Pearce then announced that they will fight in a War Games match.
Drew McIntyre attacked Jey Uso on November 13 RAW episode where Jey and Cody were challenging Judgment Day duo for tag team titles. He stood with Rhea Ripley on the stage to close that show. On November 20 RAW, Drew announced that he would be the fifth member with Team Judgment Day in War Games match. Drew defeated Jey to win the entry advantage match. Cody, Seth and Sami had to run out to save Jey from post-match assault. Following this, Cody announced that Randy Orton would be returning to be the fifth member of their team.
Rhea Ripley(c) vs Zoey Stark – Women’s World Championship
Rhea Ripley successfully defended her Women’s World Championship in a fatal 5-way match at Crown Jewel. Zoey Stark was part of that match, but was not involved in the result as Rhea pinned Shayna Baszler in that match. WWE announced a Battle Royal to find the new #1 contender on November 6 episode of RAW. Zoey last eliminated Shayna to win the match. The title match was then announced to take place at Survivor Series.
Gunther(c) vs The Miz – WWE Intercontinental Championship
Miz hosted WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther on his talk show “The Miz TV” where Gunther insulted him, followed by a beatdown from Imperium. Miz went to RAW General Manager Adam Pearce to ask for a match against Gunther, but Pearce instead put him in a fatal 4-way #1 contender match for Intercontinental Championship on RAW November 6 episode.. The Miz won the match by pinning Bronson Reed while Ivar was simultaneously pinned Ricochet, who kicked out at the last moment. The match was announced to take place Survivor Series. Ivar then attacked The Miz to set up a match the following week on RAW.
Women’s War Games Match
Bianca Belair, Charlotte Flair, Asuka and Shotzi were feuding with Damage CTRL since Iyo won Women’s MITB briefcase. Iyo won WWE Women’s title at SummerSlam from Bianca after a successful cash-in. She retained the title against Flair and Asuka in the coming months. Kairi Sane returned to WWE at Crown Jewel 2023 to attack Bianca to cost her the title match. On SmackDown November 10 episode, Bianca, Asuka and Flair took part in a trios match against Sane, Iyo and Bayley. Asuka turned on her team during the match and joined Damage CTRL.
The following week on SmackDown, Damage CTRL challenged Bianca and others for War Games match. Flair then called up Becky Lynch to join their team. Becky had a rivalry with Damage CTRL leading up to WrestleMania 39.
Santos Escobar vs Dragon Lee
Rey Mysterio lost United States Championship to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel 2023 event after using brass knuckles despite Santos Escobar trying to make the save. On the following SmackDown episode, Carlito blamed Escobar for Mysterio’s loss, leaving Escobar angry. Carlito lost to Bobby Lashley on the same. Escobar was at ringside when Lashley & The Street Profits were assaulting Carlito after the match, but did not try to save him. When Mysterio confronted him over this, he ended up shoving Escobar. Escobar then turned on Mysterio and slammed his knee into the steel steps.
On November 17 SmackDown, Escobar cut a scathing promo, insulting Mysterio and Carlito. Carlito then challenged him for a match which was announced for Survivor Series. On November 24 SmackDown, Escobar and Carlito got involved in a brawl. After they were broken up, Escobar attacked Carlito from behind to hurt him. Escobar once again attacked Carlito backstage. Later, SmackDown Manager Nick Aldis informed that Carlito was not cleared for a match at Survivor Series and it was postponed. Dragon Lee then came in and asked for a chance to teach Escobar a lesson. Aldis then booked Lee vs Escobar match.
