STORYLINES
Royal Rumble Matches: The Royal Rumble event features separate men and women’s Royal Rumble matches. The match is basically an Over-The-Top-Rope battle royal featuring 30 men where a new participant enters the match every 90 seconds. The winner of respective matches are eligible for a World Championship title shot at WrestleMania.
Rhodes vs Owens 3: Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens first clashed over Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Championship back at Bash in Berlin 2024 event where Cody retained the title. At the time, Owens, Cody and Randy Orton were continously in a feud with the Bloodline. Cody then teamed up with Roman Reigns to face The Bloodline at Bad Blood event. This angered Owens who had been fighting Roman for years. Owens attacked Cody after Bad Blood in the parking lot. Owens also turned on Orton which led to Owens taking out Orton with a piledriver. Cody then challenged Owens for a match. Owens refused at first, but they ultimately agreed to a match at Saturday Night’s Main Event 37 in December. WWE brought back the old winged eagle WWE Championship belt for this event. The match ended with Cody dropping Owens on a steel chair with Crossrhodes which was brought into the ring by Owens himself. As Cody celebrated with the vintage belt, Owens attacked him with a packaged piledriver and took away the winged eagle belt, proclaiming that Cody cheated in their match and he was the rightful WWE Champion. On December 27 SmackDown episode, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis ordered Owens to return the belt and threatened to fire Owens over it. Cody then interrupted them and offered Owens another shot at WWE Championship where the referee would not be able to stop the match. Aldis then announced a ladder match between them at Royal Rumble with both belts on the line. In the following weeks, Cody and Owens were involved in several brawls. They also met for a contract signing segment at Saturday Night’s Main Event 38 on January 25, with Shawn Michaels as a special co-ordinator. Owens took a cheap shot at Cody during this segment and also tried to hit Michaels with a piledriver, but this led to both Cody and Michaels hitting Owens with superkicks.
DIY vs MCMG 2-out-of-3 Falls Match: Motor City Machine Guns(MCMG) defeated DIY in their first encounter in October in the final of #1 contender tournament for tag team titles. MCMG won the WWE Tag Team Championship later. The following week, Tomasso Ciampa turned heel and attacked MCMG the following month. And while Gargano showed like he was still the good guy, he also turned heel during their tag title shot against MCMG, leading to DIY winning the titles. MCMG got a rematch at January 3 SmackDown episode, but the match ended in a no-contest after Legado Del Fantasma and Pretty Deadly got involved. In the following weeks, MCMG defeated A-Town Down Under, Los Garzas, Pretty Deadly to become the #1 contenders for the tag titles once again. Their title shot was then announced to be a 2-out-of-3 falls match at Royal Rumble.
