WWE Backlash 2023 is a pro-wrestling event from WWE which took place on May 6, 2023. The event aired from Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Cody Rhodes vs Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins vs Omos, US title, RAW Women’s title and SmackDown Women’s title matches took place on the show. Puerto Rican Rapper, Singer & Pop Star Bad Bunny returned to in-ring action in WWE where he faced Damian Priest.

  • This is the 18th event in the Backlash series from WWE.
  • The name “Backlash” signifies the fallout as WWE deals with the fallout from that year’s WrestleMania event.
  • For the last two years, the event went by the name WrestleMania Backlash, but it has now reverted back to “Backlash” name this year.
  • This is the first event that WWE held in Puerto Rico since 2005 when they held New Year’s Revolution event at the same venue.
  • Grammy Award Winner Bad Bunny was earlier supposed to play the host of the Backlash 2023 event. However, he later took part in a street fight against Damian Priest.
  • WWE announced the event on March 8, 2023, and the tickets went on sale on March 24, 2023.
  • The event was sold out by March 28.

Bianca Belair(c) vs Iyo Sky – WWE RAW Women’s Championship

Iyo Sky defeated Mia Yim and Piper Niven in a triple threat match to become the #1 contender for RAW Women’s Championship. The match was later announced to take place at Backlash 2023. Bianca teamed up with Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez to defeat Damage CTRL on RAW April 24 episode. Iyo and Bianca also fell into an argument backstage on RAW May 1 episode.

Winner: Bianca Belair

Seth Rollins vs Omos

A singles match was added to the card as The Architech and Monday Night Messiah Seth Freakin’ Rollins took on Omos in a marquee match.

Austin Theory(c) vs Bobby Lashley vs Bronson Reed – Triple Threat Match for WWE United States Championship

Bronson Reed and Bobby Lashley fight to double count-out on RAW April 10 episode. Reed then interrupted in Austin Theory vs Bobby Lashley singles match on RAW April 17 episode. Later, WWE announced a triple-threat match between them for United States Championship.

Rhea Ripley(c) vs Zelina Vega – WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship

Judgment Day and LWO are feuding since before WrestleMania along with Rey vs Dominik rivalry. Zelina Vega(of LWO) also came at odds with Rhea Ripley many times during this rivalry. On April 21 SmackDown, she asked Adam Pearce to book a match against Rhea Ripley for SmackDown Women’s title citing she was the only woman from Puerto Rican descent in the women’s division and she wanted to prove her doubters wrong. The match was later made official. Rhea and Zelina were part of a mixed tag team match between Judgment Day and LWO on RAW May 1 episode where Judgment Day won but Zelina took Rhea out with a Meteora on the floor.

Bad Bunny vs Damian Priest – Street Fight

Bad Bunny saved Rey Mysterio from outside interference during his match against Dominik at WrestleMania 39. On RAW After WrestleMania, Bad Bunny once again tried to save Rey Mysterio from an attack from Dominik and Damian Priest. Priest ended up putting Bad Bunny through the announce table. Bad Bunny returned to save Rey Mysterio from Damian Priest on RAW April 24, 2023 episode and hit him with a kendo stick. Bunny then announced that he would face Priest in a street fight.

The Bloodline(Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso & Solo Sikoa) vs Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens & Matt Riddle

The Usos  &Solo Sikoa vs Sami Zayn ,Kevin Owens & Matt Riddle WWE Backlash 2023

Matt Riddle was put out of action after an attack from Solo Sikoa in December 2022. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn defeated The Usos at WrestleMania 39 to end their historic tag team championship reign. Riddle returned to save Sami from a beat down on SmackDown April 7 episode to resume his rivalry with The Bloodline. Kevin Owens then lost to Solo Sikoa at RAW April 10 and Sami Zayn and Matt Riddle had to run out to save him from the Bloodline. Riddle then faced Solo at April 14 SmackDown and lost to him. Solo went on to attack Riddle after the match and buried him under the announce table.

WWE announced on April 17 that Sami, Owens, and Riddle would face The Usos and Solo Sikoa in a trios match at Backlash. Solo defeated Riddle in the No Disqualification match on April 21 SmackDown episode. Sami and Owens retained tag team titles against The Usos on SmackDown’s April 28 episode after Riddle stopped Solo from interfering in the match. Riddle also defeated Jimmy Uso in a singles match on RAW May 1 episode.

Brock Lesnar vs Cody Rhodes

Brock Lesnar came out to be Cody Rhodes’ partner for a tag team match against Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa on RAW After WrestleMania episode on April 3, 2023. However, he attacked Cody before the match could begin. On the following episode of RAW, Cody challenged Brock for a match at Backlash. On RAW April 17 episode, Cody asked for Brock to come out. Adam Pearce agreed to book this match in order to keep Cody calmed down when Brock came out to the stage. Cody still attacked the security that was trying to keep him away from Brock. Brock appeared on May 1 RAW episode where Cody was able to attack him from behind and kicked him at his face, sent his hat flying and left his face bloodied.

Winner: Cody Rhodes
