NOTES & STORYLINES
2024 edition is the 37th event from WWE in Summerslam chronology. It is the second time the event would take place in Cleveland with the first event taking place back in 1996.
During the King and Queen of the Ring 2024 Kick-off Show, Triple H announced that the winner of the King of the Ring and Queen of the Ring tournaments would get a World title shot at SummerSlam 2024.
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Gunther won the King of the Ring 2024 tournament, and thus, earned a shot at World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2024. Damian Priest was the reigning champion after retaining his title at Money in the Bank and was announced to face Gunther. The duo came face-to-face during RAW July 15 episode where Gunther claimed that he wanted to bring prestige to the title and called Priest “street trash”. Gunther continued his promo on the same lines the following week, which prompted Priest to attack him. While the security tried to keep them apart, they were told to leave the arena. Finn Balor, Priest’s stablemate, then announced he would face Gunther in a singles match the following week.
Women’s World Championship Match: On RAW April 8, 2024 episode, Liv Morgan attacked Rhea Ripley, the Women’s World Champion at the time. Rhea injured her shoulder due to this attack, and therefore, had to relinquish the title. Liv announced that she would take away everything from Rhea. However, it was Becky Lynch who won the Battle Royal on April 22 RAW episode to win the title. Liv Morgan then won the title from Becky after Dominik Mysterio’s interference allowed her to use a steel chair. Dominik was actually trying to stop Liv from winning the title, but ended up aiding him inadvertently. In the following weeks, Dominik’s inadvertent help led to Liv retaining the title against Becky and Zelina. Liv tried several tactics to charm Dominik all this while which ultimately happened on RAW July 8 episode where Liv’s interference led to Dominik pinning his father Rey Mysterio in a mixed tag team match. Following the match, Dominik and Liv were about to kiss when Rhea Ripley made her return to chase after Liv. Dominik tried to explain himself, but Rhea did not listen to him. The following week, Rhea announced that she would face Liv for Women’s World title. Throughout the episode, Dominik tried to make amends with Rhea who continued to ignore him. Liv tried to help Dominik in his match against Jey Uso, but Rhea chased her away. Later, Rhea gave Dominik a black rose to accept his apology. The following week, Liv tried to talk to Dominik, but Balor intervened. When Rhea got to know about this, she took Dominik to the ring and dared Liv to come and take him. Liv appeared in the crowd and asked Dominik to express his love for her. Dominik instead said he hated Liv who had destroyed his life.
McIntyre vs Punk: Punk and McIntyre have been feuding since the start of this year. Punk got injured at the hands of McIntyre in the men’s Royal Rumble match. McIntyre then said he prayed for Punk to get injured, which turned into a reality. McIntyre defeated Rollins for World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 before going to showboat in front of Punk, who was on the commentary table. Punk tripped McIntyre on the table, paving the way for Money in the Bank holder Damian Priest to cash in the title contract and beat McIntyre for the title. Punk also cost McIntyre during the #1 contender match the following night on RAW. Later at Clash at the Castle in Scotland, Punk acted as an impromptu referee when the original referee during McIntyre vs Priest rematch got injured. McIntyre had hit Priest with Claymore when Punk came in as a referee but stopped the count at two. He also hit a low blow on McIntyre, leading to Priest winning the match. McIntyre hit back at Punk in Chicago during SmackDown episode. McIntyre then won Money in the Bank briefcase and cashed it in on the same night during the match between Damian Priest and Seth Rollins to make it a triple threat. Punk attacked McIntyre during the match, leading to Priest getting the win once again. Rollins had to be held back from an argument with Punk as the stipulation for the match stated that Rollins would not get another title shot until Priest was the champion. McIntyre was suspended from WWE due to his outbursts during post-show at MITB. Punk’s promo on the following RAW episode was interrupted by Rollins who promised to put Punk back on shelf when he gets cleared. McIntyre was asked to come back on RAW July 15 episode to discuss about the match against Punk, but he refused to apologise to the referees who got hit during his matches. Rollins saved Pearce and the referees from McIntyre. The following week, McIntyre apologized to the referees before confronting Punk who had announced that he was cleared medically. Pearce announced that the match between McIntyre and Punk was official before announcing Rollins as the special referee for this match.
Undisputed WWE Champion: Cody Rhodes defeated The Bloodline’s head and The Tribal Chief Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 to win Undisputed WWE Championship. Roman took a sabbatical after WrestleMania. Solo Sikoa assumed the role of The Tribal Chief in his absense and introduced new members to the Bloodline. After Cody retained the title against AJ Styles at Clash at the Castle, Solo and company attacked Cody, but Randy Orton and Kevin Owens came to his aid. On the following SmackDown, Solo was cornered by this trio when Jacob Fatu made his debut to beat them up. Solo pinned Cody during a trios match at Money in the Bank event, making him eligible for a title shot. On SmackDown July 12 episode, Cody then announced that Solo would get his title shot at SummerSlam. The Bloodline attacked Cody. Orton came for the save, but The Bloodline forced Cody to see Orton being put through the table. Cody was supposed to face Austin Theory and Grayson Waller in a tag team match. Solo warned anyone from tagging with Cody. Owens returned to tag with Cody, but the duo got attacked by The Bloodline after the match. They once again forced Cody to watch while they put Owens through the table.
WWE Women’s Championship Match: Nia Jax won the Queen of the Ring 2024 tournament which gave her a shot at the WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam 2024. Bayley held the title and was set to defend it against Nia. Nia attacked Bayley during a promo segment on SmackDown July 12 episode after Bayley hit Money in the Bank holder Tiffany Stratton. Bayley was also ringside during Nia’s match against Michin and once again got into an altercation with her.
WWE United States Championship Match: LA Knight targeted a match against WWE United States Champion Logan Paul, but Logan kept ignoring his callouts. Knight even invaded Logan’s home in Puerto Rico and asked him to come to SmackDown. Knight pinned Logan during a triple threat MITB qualifier on June 28 SmackDown episode. After an unsuccessful MITB, Knight brought up how he pinned Logan and announced that SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis had signed up for his match against Logan at SummerSlam. Logan appeared the following week on SmackDown, where Knight goaded him into signing up for the match which was to be held in Paul’s hometown area of Cleveland, OH.
