IC Title Ladder Match Announced for Clash of Champions

WWE Intercontinental Championship Clash of Champions 2020

Jeff Hardy announced on tonight’s SmackDown that he will defend his Intercontinental title against both AJ Styles and Sami Zayn in a ladder match at Clash of Champions 2020 PPV.

AJ Styles and Sami Zayn faced-off in a singles match this week on SmackDown. Before the match, Zayn once again insisted on being called the real Intercontinental Champion. The match went back and forth between them before Styles got the win with a surprise roll-up.

After the match, Jeff Hardy came out to take on both of his title challengers. After some brawling, Hardy cut a promo saying that he is sick of all the quibbling over the title and is ready to face both of them. He then announced the Ladder match stipulation for the match at Clash of Champions.

Sami Zayn was Stripped Off The Title

Sami Zayn won his first Intercontinental title at Elimination Chamber this year defeating Braun Strowman in a handicapped match. Later, he successfully defended the title against Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 36.

However, Zayn decided not to attend WWE tapings amid the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. WWE then decided to strip him off the Intercontinental Championship and held a tournament to crown the new champion.

AJ Styles won the final of the tournament defeating Daniel Bryan to be crowned the Intercontinental Champion. He subsequently defended the title against the likes of Drew Gulak and Matt Riddle. However, he finally succumbed against Jeff Hardy.

Sami Returned to Claim His Title

Sami Zayn returned to SmackDown after SummerSlam and claimed himself to be the real IC Champion. Since then, all three of Zayn, Styles and Hardy were involved in various brawls and matches. Zayn also interrupted during last week’s title match between Hardy and Styles to cause a DQ.

It was always expected that WWE is building up towards a triple threat match at the Clash of Champions. However, the Ladder match stipulation is a good surprise for the fans.
