UFC 309 PPV event was UFC’s return to Maddison Square Garden in New York City, NY, on November 16, 2024. It was headlined by UFC Heavyweight Championship bout between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic.

The event started at 6 PM ET with the early prelims card, followed by the prelims card at 8 PM ET and the main card at 10 PM ET. The main card aired via ESPN+ PPV in United States, while the prelims card aired on ESPN+ streaming itself.

NOTES

UFC 309 was UFC’s ninth PPV event at Maddison Square Garden in New York City. The promotion had held a PPV event every year at this venue since 2016 in November(other than the year 2020).

UFC had introduced new design of fighter gloves starting from UFC 302 event in June 2024. However, those designs were discontinued from this event and the older gloves were brought back due to fighter complaints.

Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic were booked to headline UFC 295 at the same venue in a heavyweight title fight. The booking was canceled after Jones suffered a pectoral muscle injury. The bout was rebooked a year later at UFC 309. Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Tom Aspinall weighed in as the backup fighter for this main event.

Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler clashed in a 5-round lightweight co-main event bout. Earlier, the duo clashed at UFC 262 over the vacant lightweight championship.

Randy Brown and Carlos Prates were reported to fight at this event in a welterweight bout. Later, Prates was moved to headline UFC Fight Night on November 9, 2024, against Neil Magny.

Mauricio Ruffy and Charlie Campbell were set for a lightweight bout at this event. But, Campbell withdrew from the fight in late October. James Llontop came in as a replacement and the bout was turned into a 165 lbs catchweight bout. Llontop missed weight by 1.2 lbs as he came in at 166.2 lbs. He was fined 20% of his purse and the bout was changed once again to 166.2 lbs catchweight bout.

A featherweight bout was booked between Lucas Almeida and David Onama for the early prelims card at this event. But, Almeida pulled out of the bout due to some medical issues 10 days before the event. He was replaced by UFC debutant Roberto Romero and the bout was also turned into a lightweight bout.

A light heavyweight bout was set between Nikita Krylov and Azamat Murzakanov for the prelims card. Murzakanov pulled out of the fight with undisclosed reasons 10 days before the event.

A middleweight bout between Chris Weidman and Eryk Anders was booked for the prelims card. It was canceled on the day of the event after Anders faced some medical issues.
