Santos Escobar Earns WWE US Title Shot After Rey Mysterio Injury
Santos Escobar will face Austin Theory for WWE United States Championship on August 11, 2023 episode of WWE SmackDown.
During the July 28 episode of SmackDown, Escobar defeated Rey Mysterio to become the number one contender for the United States Championship title.
The match between Mysterio and Escobar came to an end because Mysterio sustained an injury. During the match, Escobar executed a suicide dive on Rey Mysterio, which resulted in the forceful impact of Mysterio’s head against the ringside mat.

After the incident, Mysterio was examined by both officials and the referee, Jessika Carr. After consideration from the medical team, Carr decided to stop the match, which resulted in Escobar’s declaration as the winner.
Santos Escobar was not happy with the result. He is almost in tears and pays his respects to Mysterio after the match. There are currently no updates on Mysterio’s injury and its severity.
Rey Mysterio defeated Cameron Grimes, LA Knight, and Sheamus in a Fatal four-way match to qualify for the final, whereas Escobar defeated Grayson Waller, AJ Styles, and Butch to get the opportunity.
During the July 21 episode of SmackDown, Santos Escobar defeated Austin Theory in a non-title match bout.
The August 11 episode of SmackDown, where Escobar challenges Theory, will be live from Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Canada.
