EVENT NOTES
UFC has held a PPV event at Madison Square Garden in New York early in November every year since 2016(barring 2020 due to COVID-19). UFC President Dana White took to social media to announce the 2023 PPV at MSG would take place on November 11, 2023. This will be the 7th UFC PPV event to take place at MSG.
Along with the event announcement, Dana White also confirmed that Jon Jones vs Stipe Miocic bout for UFC Heavyweight Championship would headline the event. On October 24, 2023, White took to social media to announce that Jones had suffered a shoulder injury and his fight against Miocic was off.
Prochazka had to relinquish UFC Light Heavyweight Championship before UFC 282 in December 2022 due to a shoulder injury. Jamahal Hill also had to relinquish the title in August 2023 due to torn ACL. UFC President Dana White said on August 29, 2023, in a press conference that they Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira might possibly fight in December at UFC 296 for the title. However, on September 20, 2023, Dana White announced via a video on social media that Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira will fight for the vacant Light Heavyweight title in the co-main event. When Jon Jones got injured, this bout was elevated as the main event.
Sergei Pavlovich was revealed as the back up fighter for the heavyweight title bout at this event at first. Tom Aspinall was calling him out for a fight at the same event after his win at UFC London Fight Night in July. When Jones pulled out of the fight at this event, UFC decided to introduce interim heavyweight title where Pavlovich and Aspinall would fight in the co-main event.
Joshua Van and Kevin Borjas were scheduled to clash in Dana White Contender Series 2023 season. Later, Van was pulled out of the fight to be booked against Zhalgas Zhumagulov at UFC Jacksonville. Fight Night. The bout was later rebooked to this event.
Kyung Ho Kang vs John Castañeda was earlier announced for UFC Vegas 82 on November 18. It was later pre-poned a week earlier to his event on November 11.
