Synopsis

Jake Paul had been fighting former MMA fighters turned boxers after first couple of bouts. While not much experienced in boxing, these fighters had usually been someone who can help him sell PPVs. He defeated former MMA World Champions Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley and Anderson Silva and maintained his unbeaten record. However, Nate Diaz had been a name that he had been calling out since his knockout of Ben Askren in April 2021.

Nate Diaz had been involved in several successful PPVs for UFC. He was under contract with UFC and became a free agent only after UFC 279 in September 2022, beating Tony Ferguson. After becoming a free agent, he decided to move towards boxing. Daiz’s team got into an altercation with Paul’s team backstage at Jake Paul vs Anderson Silva event. Paul challenged Diaz for a boxing match later that night after beating Silva.

Paul, however, next faced Tommy Fury in March 2022 where Paul suffered his first career loss via split decision. The back and forth between Diaz and Paul continued further before the bout was finally announced to take place on August 5. The event which this fight headlined was a joint presentation from Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions and Diaz’s Real Fight Inc. It was also Diaz’s boxing debut.

While the fight was initially announced as an 8-round fight, Paul later announced that Diaz was pushing for a 10-round fight. On June 20, 2023, Paul announced that their bout was turned into a 10-round fight.
