Gunther will compete against Braun Strowman to defend the WWE Intercontinental Championship on the January 13, 2023 episode of SmackDown.
On last Friday’s episode of WWE SmackDown, Imperium presented a highlight reel of Gunther’s domination on SmackDown during 2022. The video package included him winning Intercontinental Championship and remaining undefeated in singles competition during the year.
Strowman interrupted Imperium once again and pointed out how he was missing from the video, meaning that Gunther had not been defeated him. As Strowman attacked the group, they were able to overwhelm him with a numbers game until Ricochet stepped in and saved The Monster.
The rivalry between Strowman and Gunther(and Imperium) started during SmackDown World Cup tournament last year. Strowman claimed that he would win the tournament and then, he would like to win the Intercontinental title. However, Imperium interrupted during his semifinal match against Ricochet to cost him the match.
Strowman has continued to target Gunther and his Imperium buddies ever since. He also teamed up with Ricochet to beat Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci on the Christmas edition of SmackDown one week earlier.
WWE confirmed that Strowman will finally get his title shot two weeks later. Will The Monster of All Monsters be able to dethrone Gunther?
January 13, 2023 episode of SmackDown will air from Resch Center in Green Bay, WI. Check here for the tickets for upcoming WWE events.
