Rey Vargas vs O’Shaquie Foster Bout Set for February 11
Rey Vargas vs O’Shaquie Foster bout for the vacant WBC Super Featherweight Championship now has a date and location.
The pair will meet on February 11, 2023, at Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, ESPN’s Mike Coppinger has reported. The fight will headline a PBC event on Showtime.
Additionally, Subriel Matias vs Jeremias Ponce for the vacant IBF Super Lightweight title will also be on the undercard of the same event.
WBC Super Featherweight title became vacant when Shakur Stevenson relinquished the unified titles to step up to the lightweight division. Rey Vargas is also stepping up from Featherweight to Super Featherweight by relinquishing WBC Featherweight title.
Vargas won that title by beating Mark Magsayo via a split decision in July. It was his second World title after holding Super Bantamweight title from 2017 to 2020 and vacated that title only after suffering a leg injury.
O’Shaquie Foster is coming off a unanimous decision win over Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov in March this year which made him the #1 contender for the WBC Featherweight title. This win was the ninth in a row for Foster, a run dating back to 2017.
IBF Super Lightweight title was vacated by Josh Taylor earlier this year. Subriel Matias comes in the event with a win over Petros Anayan in January this year. With this win, Matias avenged his only career loss to Anayan in 2020. Ponce will be making his US debut with his bout against Matias.
