PREVIEW
Artur Beterbiev was ordered by WBO to face mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde. This meant that Beterbiev had to defend all three of his IBF, WBC & WBO Light Heavyweight Championships in this bout.
Beterbiev, a knockout artist with 18 stoppage wins in as many fights, is now a World Champion for more than 5 years. He first won the vacant IBF title by beating Enrico Kölling in November 2017. He later added to the WBC title by defeating Oleksandr Gvozdyk in October 2019. Since the start of 2021, Beterbiev has won over Adam Deines, Marcus Browne, and Joe Smith Jr. The bout against Smith also had Smith’s WBO title on the line which Beterbiev added to his waist.
For Anthony Yarde, this was be the second chance to win a World title. He previously challenged and failed to defeat Sergey Kovalev in 2019, losing via TKO in the eleventh round. Also known for this knockout prowess, Yarde became mandatory for the WBO title after avenging his loss to Lyndon Arthur. However, WBO allowed Smith to face Beterbiev instead. With Beterbiev beating Smith in June 2022, he had to next face Yarde in a WBO mandatory defense.
The bout was earlier scheduled for October 29, 2022, but it had to be rescheduled to January 2023 when Beterbiev got injured. Yarde went on to face Stefani Koykov in November as a tune-up fight before this match.
