Tournament to Decide New World Heavyweight Champion, Final at WWE Night of Champions
A tournament is announced to crown the inaugural WWE World Heavyweight Champion with the final taking place at WWE Night of Champions 2023.
WWE hosted a press conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico before Backlash 2023 event. WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H brought up the new World Heavyweight Championship being introduced to WWE before telling us how the first champion will be crowned.
Triple H announced a tournament which will crown the inaugural champion starting at RAW May 8 episode. Two triple-threat matches will take on RAW this Monday with the winner of those matches going ahead in the main event of the show later in the night. The winner of this match will be one of the competitors in the world title match.
Similarly, 2 triple threat matches will take on SmackDown May 12 episode also with the winner clashing later that night. The winner of the main event match will face the winner from RAW side at Night of Champions 2023 event.
The new championship was introduced by WWE after Roman Reigns, with his part time contract, has not been available week to week to defend his unified Universal Championship and WWE Championship.
Seth Rollins, Finn Balor, Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley and LA Knight are some of the early favorites to win the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
Night of Champions 2023 takes place on May 27 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. No other matches are made official for the show yet.
