Kenny Omega Challenging Will Ospreay at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17

Kenny Omega vs Will Ospreay

Will Ospreay will have a big opponent in the form of Kenny Omega at NJPW Wrestle Kingston 17.

Will Ospreay defended his IWGP US Heavyweight Championship against Shota Umino at NJWPxStardom Historic X-Over 2022 event on November 20. After his successful defence, Kenny Omega appeared on the screen.

Omega talked about how Ospreay was meant to replace him when he left NJPW in 2019. Omega then said that Ospreay, however, has failed to fill that role and is just his knockoff. Omega then challenges Ospreay for a match for IWGP US title at Wrestle Kingdom 17. Ospreay immediately accepted the challenge to set up the match.

Will Ospreay came to AEW in August for AEW Trios Championship tournament. Kenny Omega’s The Elites face Ospreay’s United Empire in the semifinal match. Omega and Ospreay faced off during the match quite a bit before The Elites came out victorious.

Kenny Omega became the inaugural IWGP US Heavyweight Championship in July 2017 and held the title until being dethroned by Jay White on January 28, 2018. Ospreay won the vacant title at Dominion 6.12 this year in June by beating SANADA.

NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 will take place on January 4, 2023 at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. IWGP Heavyweight Championship between Jay White and Kazuchika Okada will headline the show. Omega vs Ospreay might end up being the co-main event for the show.
