SYNOPSIS

AEW has a deal with TNT to air 4 TV specials every year since the start of 2022. All four events in 2022 were titled Battle of the Belts. The trend has continued in 2023 with Battle of The Belts V being the first event in 2023. The show only featured title matches on the card. The show was taped along with AEW Rampage episode of the same day.

AEW announced on December 30 episode of Rampage that Orange Cassidy will defend AEW All Atlantic Championship against Kip Sabian at Battle of the Belts V. Sabian asked for a title shot after eliminating Cassidy from Trios Casino Battle Royal. However, Cassidy first gave a title shot to Trent Baretta who eliminated Sabian from the said match. Sabian’s wife Penelope Ford provided a distraction to Baretta to help Cassidy in retaining the title.

Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal defeated Billy Gunn & The Acclaimed’s Anthony Bowens in a tag team match at Rampage in December. Courtesy of this win, Jarrett and Lethal got a shot at AEW Tag Team Championship on January 4 episode of Dynamite. Jarrett hit Bowens with the Stroke in the match and Lethal went for the pin. Bowens broke the pin by putting his leg on the ropes but Sonjay Dutt removed the leg from the ropes before the referee could see. The referee awarded the match and the titles to Lethal and Jarrett. However, another referee then came out and told the match referee about the rope break. The match was then restarted and Bowens was able to pin Lethal. Later, it was announced that a rematch took place between these teams due to the controversial ending. The rematch was then announced for Battle of The Belts V and it would be a No Holds Barred Match.

Jade Cargill defended TBS Women’s Championship against Skye Blue. Cargill had previously defeated Blue twice before in singles matches apart from several tag team wins. Blue teamed up with Keira Hogan to take on Cargill and Red Velvet where Cargill pinned Hogan to get the win.
