EVENT NOTES
UFC Commentator Jon Anik mentioned during UFC 288 broadcast that UFC was targeting UFC 292 PPV event on August 19, 2023, in Boston, MA. Later, UFC President Dana White said that the promotion was targeting Aljamain Sterling vs Sean O’Malley bantamweight title bout for UFC 292.
The location was officially announced on May 16 via Dana White on UFC’s youtube channel, where he also confirmed Aljamain Sterling vs Sean O’Malley headliner along with Zhang Weili vs Amanda Lemos co-main event. UFC returned to the arena with an event for the first time since a Fight Night event in October 2019.
Rob Font and Song Yadong were set to clash in a bantamweight bout on the main card. Yadong pulled out of the bout with undisclosed reasons. Font was then moved to UFC Nashville on August 05 to face Cory Sanghagen in the main event.
Former Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman returned to the octagon at this event after 2 years. He suffered a leg break during UFC 261 against Uriah Hall and had to undergo double surgery to fix it. He faces Brad Tavares in his return bout.
Gregory Rodrigues vs Denis Tiuliulin’s bout was earlier scheduled for UFC Nashville Fight Night on June 24. Later, Rodrigues revealed that the bout was rescheduled for UFC 292 due to some issues on Tiuliulin’s end.
The finals of lightweight and bantamweight tournaments of The Ultimate Fighters Season 31 Team McGregor vs Team Chandler also took place at UFC 292. Cody Gibson faced Brad Katona in the bantamweight final, while Austin Hubbard took on Kurt Holobaugh in the lightweight final.
Ian Garry and Geoff Neal were set for a welterweight bout on the main card. Neal pulled out of the bout on August 9 due to a medical issue. Neil Magny came in as the replacement on 10 days notice.
Cody Garbrandt vs Mario Bautista bout was announced for the event. However, Garbrandt had to pull out of the bout due to an injury. Da’Mon Blackshear, who competed just one week before this event at UFC Vegas 78, came in to replace Gabrandt to face Bautista.
