Katie Taylor was earlier supposed to defend her undisputed women’s lightweight championship against Amanda Serrano in a rematch on May 20, 2023. The fight was Taylor’s first one in her home country of Ireland. In February, Serrano pulled out of the bout, leaving the event in doubt.

Taylor then challenged undisputed women’s super lightweight champion Chantelle Cameron on March 2, 2023, in an attempt to become a two-division undisputed champion. Cameron accepted the challenge to defend her undisputed title. On March 11, Eddie Hearn announced that Cameron has replaced Serrano to face Taylor on May 20. Taylor would become just the second women to become an undisputed champion in two weight classes after Claressa Shields.
