SYNOPSIS
The discussion about this super fight first started when Ryan Garcia called out Gervonta Davis after his win over Javier Fortuna in July 2022. It was his second win after he returned to boxing following a one-year break in 2021 due to mental health issues. On November 17, 2022, it was announced that Davis and Garcia had agreed to a bout in 2023 to be produced by Showtime PPV.
The bout was announced to take place at 136 lbs after both Davis and Garcia would take a fight each at the start of 2023. Davis defeated Hector Luis Garcia on January 7, 2023, to defend WBA(Regular) Lightweight Championship. Garcia decided against taking a tune-up fight and directly went into final negotiations for the fight against Davis. It was reported in February that there was a hold-up in finalizing the deal over the rematch clause. As per the contract, while Davis would get a rematch if he loses the bout, the same clause was not awarded to Garcia in case he loses.
After more weeks of negotiations, Garcia reportedly agreed to the fight without the rematch clause in case of his loss. In other modification, the fight was also made available on Dazn PPV in United States as well apart from being available in other countries on Dazn streaming.
