WWE confirms Tomasso Ciampa’s surgery

WWE has announced that current NXT Champion Tomasso Ciampa will undergo neck surgery today. This could force Ciampa to vacate the NXT Championship and put his supposed match against Johhny Gargano at NXT Takeover: New York out of contention.

Ciampa is believed to be working with a neck injury for last few weeks in which he has worked some high intensity matches on NXT Takeover: Pheonix, HalfTime Heat Show, matches on his main roster call-up and the latest NXT episodes tapings. He will now have to undergo anterior cervical fusion process today. This kind of surgery generally takes 4 to 6 months rehabilitation process. WWE has possibly worked an angle of Johnny Gargano causing him this injury which could turn out to be the point of contention to continue the storyline between them when Ciampa returns after rehabilitation.

It will be interesting to see who will now emerge as the contenders for the NXT championship match at NXT Takeover: New York event which is to take place on 5 April this year. The ideal way would have been to host a qualifying tournament but with Dusty Rhodes Classics tournament already in progress in NXT along with Cruiserweight tournament at 205 Live, WWE might want to prevent the overkill of tournaments. Gargano is still expected to be part of any of the plans for Takeover but who will be the other challenger(s), remains to be seen.
