AEW Dynamite May 24 2023

Welcome to the live results blog for AEW Dynamite May 24, 2023 episode which aired from MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV, and is the go-home episode of Double or Nothing 2023 PPV.

3 title matches were set for the show. Orange Cassidy defended the International title against Aussie Open’s Kyle Fletcher. House of Black were back to defending AEW Trios title against Blake Christian, AR Fox and Metalik. Lucha Bros defended ROH Tag Team Championship against Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta.

A contract signing segment was set ot take place for the unsanctioned match between Chris Jericho and Adam Cole. Taya Valkyrie was set to take on Lady Frost in a singles match. All 4 of AEW World Championship match competitors were in spotlight as we heard from all of them.

RESULTS

  • Orange Cassidy(c) defeated Kyle Fletcher in a singles match via pinfall to retain AEW International Championship.
  • House of Black(Malakai Black, Buddy Mathews & Brody King)(c) defeated Blake Christian, AR Fox & Metalik in Open House Rules Match via submission to retain AEW Trios Championship.
  • Taya Valkyrie defeated Lady Frost in a singles match via pinfall.
  • Roderick Strong defeated Daniel Garcia in a singles match via pinfall.
  • Lucha Bros(Rey Fenix & Pentagon Jr.)(c) defeated Blackpool Combat Club(Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta) in a tag team match via pinfall to retain ROH Tag Team Championship.

LIVE UPDATES

Orange Cassidy(c) vs Kyle Fletcher – AEW International Championship

Fletcher rushes Cassidy with a sidekick right out of the bell as Cassidy is handing over things to the referee. He hits a sheer drop brainbuster for a close two-count. Fletcher hits a dropkick to send Cassidy to the floor before a suicide dive. Back to the ring, Fletcher hits a clothesline to get a two-count. Cassidy rolls to the floor. Fletcher goes to the top and poses, allowing Cassidy to push him off. Cassidy jumps off the top to hit a DDT on the apron and then hits a beach break on the floor.

Fletcher is dazed but is able to beat the countdown barely. Fletcher ducks a clothesline and then an Orange punch. Fletcher nails a superkick to get a two-count. Fletcher hits a delayed vertical suplex after holding Cassidy in air for more than 30 seconds. We cut to a break.

Cassidy hits a stundog millionaire and a DDT to get a close two-count. Cassidy goes to the top. Fletcher brings him down and dropkicks him off the apron. Fletcher pulls him back up, only for Cassidy to hit back with elbows. Fletcher catches his crossbody and hits a Michinoku driver to get a two-count. Cassidy looks for beach break but Fletcher flips him over before landing a stiff right. Fletcher with more punches and kick.

Cassidy hits a brainbuster once again. He hits lazy chops before ducking a clothesline and hits a Michinoku driver. Fletcher counters Beach Break and hits back-to-back piledrivers for a near fall. Fletcher takes Cassidy to the top and hits an avalanche Michinoku driver to get another near fall. Cassidy once again counters with a DDT. Fletcher hits a superkick. Cassidy counters and gets Fletcher’s leg in zigzag to get the pinfall.

Winner – Orange Cassidy

Daniel Garcia is backstage for an interview. He will also be in Black Jack Battle Royal. Garcia says he was in full control last week when he attacked Jay White with a chair because Jay and Juice Robinson keep doing their thing and there is no one to stop them. Robinson and White attack Garcia and slams a steel chair on his back. White says this is not over and they will keep coming after them.


Jungle Boy gets a pre-recorded promo. He talks about driving to Las Vegas multiple times in the past and some key moments around it. He says he becomes a little bit better everytime. He claims that his journey will now lead for him to become AEW World Champion.


FTR come out to the ring. Cash starts the promo and says Lethal and Jarrett have been one step ahead of them on ever move, but that will change at Double or Nothing. Dax says Jarrett has smashed many guitars on their back and talks some trash, claiming that two TNA rejects will not be AEW Tag Team Champions. Mark Briscoe comes out. Cash tells him that they do not want him to look stupid. Briscoe asks Dax what that piledriver was about last week. Dax apologizes but Briscoe slaps his hand away. Cash stops Dax from attacking back. Briscoe leaves the ring and swats away everyone from Jay Lethal’s team. He tells Lethal that he is getting tired of his shenanigans.


Sammy Guevara is interviewed by Renee Paquette who relays a message from MJF that the offer for Sammy to lay down at Double or Nothing still stands. Sammy tells MJF that he can’t buy everything. He says he has chosen other things over money everytime someone has offered him. He claims that he will take the title away from MJF.

House of Black(Malakai Black, Buddy Mathews & Brody King)(c) vs Blake Christian, AR Fox & Metalik – Open House Rules Match for AEW Trios Championship

Blake and Buddy start. Buddy gets an armwringer before hitting a pump knee to send Blake to the floor. Metalik comes in and sends Buddy to the floor. Black attacks Metalik from behind. Fox comes in to drop Black before Brody comes in. Blake hits a corkscrew kick on Brody before he splashes him in the corner. Blake escapes and tags in Metalik. Some action follows and Blake and Metalik are able to hit a crossbody on the floor.

Brody no-sells some chops to the chest before dropping Fox with a big shot. Fox is able to get Brody to the floor before hitting everyone with a moonsault on the floor. Fox takes Buddy back to the ring. Buddy avoids a senton and hits the curbstomp. Buddy puts on the inverted cloverleaf on Fox. Black comes in and puts Metalik in a kneebar when he tries to interfere. Blake hits a superkick on Buddy but he holds onto the submission. Brody puts a sleeper choke on Blake. Fox taps out.

Winner – House of Black

Blackpool Combat Club are backstage. Bryan says they have two missions this week in winning ROH Tag Team titles and taking down the Elite at Double or Nothing. Moxley says they are the best pro wrestler in the world and they will prove it at Double or Nothing.

4 Pillars

AEW World Champion MJF is out in the ring. He says the city is called Sin City but they need to change it to “Virgin Vegas”. He trash talks about all of his 3 opponents, wishing horrible things for them. But unlike his peers, he knows how monumental this week’s match is. He says they are all homegrown AEW wrestlers and did not have a cheat code of appearing on TV before. MJF says he is pissed at the lack of competition and at AEW crowd. He brings up his contract coming up and he threatens to run away with AEW World title if his demands are not met.

Darby Allin comes out to the ring. MJF asks him if he has something to say. Darby says he lost many things in his life but he never lost his mind. He recalls people telling him not to take risks but that led him towards mediocare things and he had to sleep in his car. But then he arrived in AEW which gave him a chance to express himself. Darby says this Sunday, he has the chance to become AEW World Champion and he might do it with a side headlock takeover. Sammy Guevara comes out and MJF leaves the ring immediately. Jungle Boy runs MJF over with a clothesline and poses with AEW World title.


We get a pre-recorded promo from AEW TNT Champion and Arn Anderson who cut promos against Christian Cage.

Taya Valkyrie vs Lady Frost

They lock up and Taya takes Frost down with a waistlock to get a two-count. The same things repeats once more. Frost hits Taya with Tijeras. Taya quickly sends her to the corner to hit a corner splash. Taya hits an overhead chop before she misses a spear in the corner. Frost nails her with a step-up enzuigiri. Taya counters a handspring move with a clothesline to get a two-count. Jade Cargill comes out to the stage to cut to a break.

Frost hits a handspring cannonball in the corner. Taya comes back with a spear before hitting a sitout slam. She hits a big stomp before she poses to intimidate Cargill. Frost nails her with a roundhouse kick. Taya fights back and quickly hits Road to Valhalla to get the pinfall.

Winner – Taya Vallkyrie

Tony Khan announces that AEW Collision debut on June 17 will be at United Center in Chicago, IL.


Adam Page is backstage for an interview and is asked about his status of friendship with The Elite. Page says he was always good friends with The Young Bucks but his relationship with Kenny has always been odd. But, they have been together through so much that they are like family and they will take down Blackpool Combat Club who tried to hurt in many ways.

Contract Signing

Tony Schiavone presides the contract signing segment for unsanctioned match between Adam Cole and Chris Jericho. Cole comes out with Roderick Strong while Jericho has whole JAS with him. Schiavone says AEW will not be responsible for what happens in this match and it is a personal contract between Jericho and Cole. Cole signs the contract hastily without reading it. He says he tries to understand why Jericho got him handcuffed to the ropes and get Britt Baker beaten up. He thinks that it is because Jericho thinks he is invincible. Cole says he can at Jericho within inch of his life right here right now. He continues the trash talk claiming that he will break Jericho’s legs, mouth and hands.

Jericho also signs the contract now. Jericho then gets us the clip of beatdown of Britt displayed on the big screen. Cole has to be held back by Strong. Jericho says he will outsmart Cole once again and will beat him at Double or Nothing. Jericho says it will be because Cole just has Strong while JAS has 5 members. Cole says he knew this, and so, he called someone who lives in Las Vegas, who is suicidal and genocidal, Sabu. Sabu gets into the ring. Matt Menard tries to attack him but Sabu slams him with a steel chair. JAS run out of the ring immediately.


We get a vignette for AEW Women’s Championship match where Toni Storm says she will rip off Jamie Hayter’s arm and eat it off.

Daniel Garcia vs Roderick Strong

They lock and tussle for a bit. Strong has Garcia in a side headlock takedown on the mat. They trade chops after Garcia gets up. After Garcia rocks him with a punch, Strong hits a backbreaker to take us to a break.

Garcia plants Strong’s face into the mat with a curbstomp. More stomps from Garcia after some shenanigans. Strong counters a suplex with one of his own. He hits a couple of lariats, a dropkick, a running knee and waist lock takedown to get a two-count. Garcia jabs at his throat. Strong hits a backbreaker. He corners Garcia into the corner. Garcia hits blows to the back and big boot. Strong hits a knee to midsection. Garcia hits jawbreaker, overhead chops and Urinage for a two-count. He takes Strong’s face when he gets Garcia on his shoulders. Garcia puts on dragontamer on. Strong rolls over and kicks Garcia away. He hits a gutbuster and then hits heartache to get the pinfall.

We see clips of Willow Nightingale winning NJPW Strong Women’s Championship at NJPW Resurgence 2023.

Lucha Bros(Rey Fenix & Pentagon Jr.)(c) vs Blackpool Combat Club(Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta) – ROH Tag Team Championship

All 4 men fight in the ring as the bell rings. Lucha Bros clear the ring and hits suicide dives on BCC counterparts on the floor. Penta hits a crossbody before Fenix follows up with a double jump crossbody. Penta hits a package piledriver on Yuta, and Claudio has to break the pin. Lucha Bros go for double team spiked piledriver but Claudio blocks it with an uppercut on Fenix. Claudio tags in but Penta nails him with a superkick. Penta hits a dive on Yuta on the floor after tag to Fenix. Claudio catches Fenix with an uppercut mid-air to take us to a break.

Fenix hits a back body drop on Yuta but Claudio comes in quickly to sopt the tag. Claudio puts Fenix in a swing before slamming him to the mat. Fenix counters a powerbomb with stomp. Penta and Yuta get the tags. Penta hits a crossbody before sending Claudio to the floor. He drops Yuta on his knees. Penta stretches Yuta’s shoulder until Claudio comes in to hit a kick to break it. Fenix tags in and Lucha Bros nail their opponents with tandem kicks. Claudio drops Fenix on Yuta by mistake.

Penta hits a knee on Claudio before Fenix hits a piledriver on Yuta. Yuta kicks out of the pin though. Claudio pushes Penta off the top and Yuta sends Fenix into an uppercut from him. Claudio drops Fenix. Yuta hits a splash from the top but Fenix kicks out. Fenix hits Yuta with a superkick and tags in Penta. A double superkick from Lucha Bros on Yuta. The Young Bucks come out from underneath the ring to stop Claudio from saving Yuta. Lucha Bros hit double stomp piledriver to get the pinfall.

Winners – Lucha Bros
