A long winning streak and UFC Lightweight Champion will be on the line as Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev clash at UFC 280 PPV.

UFC has revealed, during UFC Long Island, the bout for the vacant 155 lbs title at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE, on October 22, 2022.

Charles Oliveira had to drop the lightweight title in May when he missed the weight before his title defense against Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. Oliveira went on to win the fight via first-round submission and was named as the #1 contender for the title. This was his 11th straight win and third finish in a row. He earlier defeated Michael Chandler at UFC 262 to win the title and then defended it successfully against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269.

Makhachev has emerged as a title contender on the back of a 10-fight winning streak himself. 6 out of those 10 wins have come either via knockout or submission. In 2021, Makhachev got three submission wins over Drew Dober, Thiago Moises and Dan Hooker. He knocked out Bobby Green in the first round this year in February.

Oliveira was always going to be in the next title fight after being declared as the #1 contender. Dana White put a question mark on Makhachev’s immediate title shot after he refused a short-notice fight against Rafael Dos Anjos. However, it might be irresistible for UFC to keep him away from a title fight after his winning streak.

Apart from the lightweight title fight, UFC 280 will also see a Welterweight showdown between Sean Brady and Belal Muhammad. Keep tuned in for the latest news and updates from UFC 280 and other upcoming MMA events.
