Kofi Kingston retains WWE Championship at SmackDown

Kofi Kingston defended the WWE Championship title against AJ Styles and Sami Zyan at SmackDown this week.

Kofi Kingston SmackDown 7 May 2019

With Kofi Kingston, Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan opening RAW the day before, AJ Styles returned the favor by opening SmackDown last night under new Wildcard rule. Sami Zayn followed him and Kofi finally came out to address them. The segment somehow ended with Kofi extending the challenge for WWE Championship for both of them.

The triple threat match was the main event of the episode where Sami Zayn was kept out for the first part. He made a comeback by sweeping both Kofi and Styles and controlled the pace of the match for some time. However, it again looked like Kofi and Styles will end the match until Kofi hit Styles with a trouble in paradise at the top turnbuckle.

At that point, Kevin Owens came out and attacked Xavier Woods at the ringside to cause a distraction to Kofi. Zayn took advantage but even after hitting the blue thunder bomb three times, he could not get the pin. As he was going for the Heluva Kick, Kofi instead hit the trouble in paradise to defend the title for the second night in the row.

Kofi is currently booked to face Kevin Owens at Money in the Bank 2019 at XL Center in Hartford, CT. For more details regarding the event, please check our MITB 2019 center.
