Johnny Gargano is scheduled to face Adam Cole at NXT Takeover: New York for the NXT Championship which was relinquished by Tomasso Ciampa after his neck surgery. Adam Cole won the Fatal 5-Way Match at last night’s NXT episode to qualify for the match.
Incumbent champion Tomasso Ciampa suffered a neck injury possibly due to the attack from his DIY team partner Johnny Gargano(kayfabe). He underwent the surgery two weeks ago and the recovery might take over six months. NXT founder Triple H came out on last night’s episode of NXT to address the situation. He said that he was coming to announce the Ciampa vs Gargano match for the Takeover: New York event but now that Ciampa is injured, they will find out a new challenger for Gargano via Fatal 5-Way match later in the night.
Former NXT Champions Adam Cole and Aleister Black, Ricochet, NXT North American Champion Velveteen Dream and Matt Riddle took part in the Fatal 5-Way match. During the final part of the match, Matt Riddle had Dream in the Bro-Mission but Cole pulled out the Referee before he could check on fading Dream. Riddle took out Cole, Black hit the Black Mass on Riddle, Dream hit the Dream Valley Driver on Black, Ricochet took him down with a Frakestiener and hit the shooting star press on Riddle but as he was going for the pin, Cole hit the running knee on Ricochet from the back and got the pin.
