Hiromu Takahashi has won the NJPW Best of Super Junior 29 tournament by beating El Desperado in the final match on June 3, 2022.

The former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion has now won the tournament for the record third time in a row and a record fourth time overall.

Takahashi and Desperado topped their respective groups on head-to-head records to second place wrestlers to make it to the final. They took each other to a limit in the final match which lasted for more than 30 minutes. Desperado thought he had the match in the bag with a super Pinche Loco, only for Takahashi to kick out. Takahashi made a comeback with a Canadian Destroyer and hit Time Bomb 2 to get a very close two-count.

More back and forth action followed for a couple of minutes. Takahashi made momentum in the final minute of the match to hit another Time Bomb 2 and got the pin.

Takahashi has been on a crusade to win the title back that he had to vacate in February 2021 due to a pectoral muscle injury. He went on to win the Best of Super Junior 28 by defeating YOH in the final to earn another shot at the Junior Heavyweight title. Later, he failed to win the title from Desperado at Wrestle Kingdom 16 earlier this year.

Desperado is on his own journey to take the title back which he lost to Taiji Ishimori at Wrestling Dontaku on May 1, 2022. He topped group B after beating El Phantasmo in the last match of the league phase. However, he will have to wait for his chance for now.

Hiromu Takahashi will go to face Taiji Ishimori at NJPW Dominion on June 12, 2022, at Osaka-Jo Hall. Takahashi must be confident heading into the final as he recently defeated Ishimori in the final league match of the tournament.
