Khamzat Chimaev remains undefeated as he beat Gilberts Burns via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 273.
This was the first time that Chimaev faced a top contender as he faced the #2 ranked welterweight fighter in Burns. The challenge proved to be a lot harder for him as this was also the first time, Chimaev failed to get the finish.
Khamzat Chimaev dominated the first round of the bout, and he even stunned Burns with a right jab before swarming him with the strikes. Unlike his previous fights, Chimaev did not bring his wrestling into play much. And one time when he attempted a takedown, Burns was able to defend successfully.
Gilbert Burns made a comeback in the second round as he stunned Chimaev with a right hand of his own a few times. By the end of it, Chimaev managed to put Burns to the ground with a takedown, but Burns clearly won that round. This is the first round that Chimaev has lost in UFC till now.
The third round featured a back and forth action as both fighters were giving their best shots. By the end of it, Chimaev was confident and he even invited Burns to charge at him. In the end, the referee lifts the hand of Khamzat Chimaev as three judges gave him two rounds.
It remains to be seen what will be Chimaev’s next fight, but he might have to wait for a title shot for a while. UFC President Dana White hinted at pairing him against Colby Covington next.
