Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko clashed in May 20. However, the bout was first came in discussion in August 2019 when Lomachenko became WBC Lightweight Champion. Two weeks later, Haney became the interim WBC Champion and a mandatory challenger for Lomachenko. Lomachenko decided to be named WBC Franchise Champion instead of facing Haney. Haney was promoted as the main WBC Lightweight Champion instead. Lomachenko went on to face Teofimo Lopez Jr. and lost the title to him.

Lopez lost the unified title to Goerge Kambosos Jr. in November 2021. Haney defeated Kambosos in the undisputed title fight in June 2022. Haney also won the rematch against Kambosos in October 2022. Haney then targeted a bout against Lomachenko after his return in later October 2022, which was for Haney’s undisputed lightweight titles.
