Two light heavyweight world champions Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr. will clash in a title unification bout on June 18, 2022.
The main event at Hulu Theater at Maddison Square Garden in New York, NY, will have three of the four major titles on the line. Beterbiev(17-0) holds WBC and IBF light heavyweight titles while Smith currently has the WBO title.
Beterbiev has proved to be an unstoppable force until now by finishing every fight via knockout in his pro boxing career. He last defeated Marcus Browne in December 2021 via ninth-round stoppage. He holds IBF titles since 2017 which he won by beating Enrico Kölling, and the WBC title since 2019 when he defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in a title unification bout. He has successfully defended the IBF title five times and unified titles twice.
On the other hand, Smith has just gone past one year as a champion and only has one title defense so far. Smith won the vacant WBO Lightweight title by beating Maxim Volkov. His first title defense against Callum Johnson was postponed once and was later canceled. Smith then defeated a late replacement in Geffrard in January this year. Smith has the reach advantage and a hometown crowd behind him. But, will be able to beat the odds.
