Rafael Fiziev won the battle of Rafaels as he dropped Rafael Dos Anjos in the fifth round in the main event of UFC Vegas 58.
Both Rafaels did some good work for the first four rounds. But, just as the fifth round started, Fiziev fient a right knee and then caught RDA with a big left to drop him immediately. Just has Fiziev went to hit more shots on the ground, the referee quickly stepped in to stop the bout.
RDA had a slight edge to start the first round as he landed his shots better. Most of the first round was spent in a clinch as RDA failed in takedown and Fiziev defended against the cage. After the break, Fiziev nailed a quick knee before both men fired some body kicks. Fiziev defended another takedown attempt in the final minute to spend more time against the cage. He closed that round with a sharp 1-2.
An eye poke halted the second round for a while. Fiziev countered a takedown with a toss. RDA resorted to a clinch when they got on their feet. Fiziev landed some good shots in the final minute while keeping RDA at bay. RDA once again tried to takedown Fiziev in third round but Fiziev kept his ground. Fiziev landed some good shots as they came to break. They traded some shots from close range to end the round.
RDA was finally able to complete a takedown in the fourth round. Fiziev was looking a bit tired as that round ended. With the decision in danger of going either way, Fiziev started the last round with urgency and was able to drop Dos Anjos immediately to stop the fight in 15 seconds of fifth round.
With this win, it is expected that Fiziev will now be ranked as high as 7 in the UFC Lightweight Division. #1 contender Charles Oliviera, Islam Makhachev and Beneil Dariush are likely to be above him with better winning streaks than his 6-fight streak.
