The #1 contender match for WWE Universal Championship will take place inside Elimination Chamber at the PPV this Sunday. Kevin Owens, Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Sami Zayn, King Corbin and Jey Uso will compete in the match.

The winner will go on to face Universal Champion Roman Reigns on the spot. However, that was not the original plan for the title match as per the latest report.

On the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer mentioned that Roman Reigns was originally planned to be part of the Elimination Chamber Match. However, plans changed most likely due to the reason WWE Championship would also be defended inside the chamber on the same night.

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre will be putting his title inside the Elimination Chamber. Universal Championship would have also gone down the same route and both matches would have similar scenarios. Hence, WWE decided to change the SmackDown’s chamber match a #1 contender bout.

On last week’s SmackDown, WWE official Adam Pearce mentioned that Reigns had to be in the Elimination Chamber match. Later, Paul Heyman explained to him that Reigns only had to be at the PPV and not necessarily be part of the Chamber match, and instead announced the #1 contender match.

If you remember, both WWE and Universal title matches were Tables, Ladders and Chairs matches at WWE TLC 2020 PPV. The same scenario would have been repeated at Elimination Chamber also if WWE had stuck to their original plan.

Elimination Chamber 2021 will do down on this Sunday, 21 February, from WWE ThunderDome at Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL.
